As newbies to caravanning we were looking forward to a 2 night stay at a local site to try out the awning, its our sons 8th birthday so he was having a friend and so was our daughter, count me and hubby and my mum ,so the awning was well needed. So we go off on saturday morning to local play park for sons party, left the site in heavy rain but all pretty calm. On our return later we arrived to see our awning up and over the top of the caravan, ripped to shreds, poles all bent and really a disaster . Thankfully some neighbouring campers tried to retrieve anything and make best of a bad situation. So is the lesson to learn, always put the storm strap on whatever the weather because this is certainly what we have learnt. As they say in hindsight you would have. Lets hope its a smooth operation if we can make a claim :(
aww sorry to hear that, its always a worry when its windy. You just reminded me gave our storm straps away with the last caravan...better look into that then!
hopefully a straight forward claim, what m,ake was the awning?

What a shame your caravanning career has got off to a bad start, I hope it hasn't put you off. We nearly lost our own once, even with storm straps on. We were in Spain one winter and a gale got up in the night. OH had to spend the night literally hanging on to the awning and it was ok, but a few other people lost theirs. I'm still nervous when the wind gets up and you can hear it creaking!

sorry about your awning, only talking about this yesterday.i would not after our experience over the years not use a storm strap full time.this is whatever the weather.hope you get it sorted soon.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
what horible luck
have a look on ebay i have just picked up a lovely awning dorema one for 100 quid just hope it fits my van...should do but you never know
Well we went out today and got ourselves a cracking awning,TWO STORM STRAPS, and they threw in a matching ground sheet too. Didnt want to risk second hand (no offense) so we got a brand spanking new one. Needless to say in all our years of camping and now caravanning its always been second hand ,and we are really excited about having something unmarked by anyone else. Hopefully in the future we can get brand new caravan
Sorry to hear of your disaster but you seem to be taking it well. I wont join everyone else in saying I always use the storm straps (but only because so many have said it already)
