Anyone out there go without EHU so that they can get away from the other caravans? What we really loved about our FC was that you could go in the tent field which seemed more free than the regimented rows of caravans.
I can just imagine the glares from tenters as you pitch amongst them! Have you considered a cl/cs? I've never used one but from what I've read on here they're often massive fields with only 5 vans on so you can pitch well away from everyone else.

Give it a go, try using CL's or CS's, generally very quiet (until someone with a generator pitches near you), but that is another story. We manage quite happily for 3 or 4 nights on battery power alone. Obvoiusly you have to be a bit carefull with your usage. I have changed all my bulbs to led's, this seems to help. You could always buy a solar panel.

Most of our weekends are on meets with C&CC so generally its a case of picking your pitch making sure you keep to the recommended distance from those around you.
If you want to stick with commercial sites I don't see why you can't express your wish to be tucked away somewhere - we use a CS & still have the pitch which we always had with the folding camper, in the tent field. Sometimes people look as if to say "what are you doing there" but they soon realise we're quite friendly & don't bite!!
Sorry to ask but what does CL and CS stand for? I think the battery might last even longer than 3 or 4 days. We could use battery lights. I guess it's just needed for the lights and water pump. Does the fridge need the battery to ignite on gas?
We've had two trips of 4 nights/5days using just battery & gas and still had enough power for the motor mover when we got back to storage. We use just one light at night, the toilet is manual flush, showers are just long enough to do the necessary and we only watch a film on a portable DVD player during the evening. Yes I think the battery is used to ignite the gas for the fridge, cooker & water heater. We had a new battery in the caravan & we take our old one from the camper as backup (mainly to make sure we have power for the motor mover)
A friend has recommended a briefcase solar panel wjich we used at the weekend & that gave us plenty of power to watch a bit of TV too I didn't think it was really necessary to have solar but I noticed loads of people had similar on our last meet & it keeps hubby happy!
We got ours from Maplins. This is the one our friends recommended. They charge up their battery at the start of their season & then use the solar for the rest of the year. They are into Flyballing & are out most weekends & they say it also keeps things ticking over during their 2 week summer holiday. So as they've proved that it works for them & the price was right (we were looking at far more powerful & expensive ones) we decided to give it a go. So far, so good!
Hi we have only used ehu twice in 5 years that was because it was included in the price we have a 40 watt solar panel that I put on the roof when we arrive on site and never had any problems with a shortage of electricity we heat the water for showers etc with gas and the fridge also on gas we use about 500g of butane gas in 24 hours we have had some really good pitches away from the usual ehu ones
I think camping without EHU is the way forward for us. The pitches are much much better. I don't like seeing rows and rows of caravans on top of each other.

CL is a Caravan Club members only 5 van location.
CS is a Camping and Caravan Club 5-van location + many take tents if they have room.
The rules state you need to show your membership card to use the sites.

So is the £9.99 solar briefcase useless then?

IMO far from it, in good sunshine, whislt it didn't fully charge me, it did extend the battery life bay a couple of days, Ok it only does 100mA max, but over a 10Hr day, its 1A, which is better than nothing, I have 3 now...
you do have to be a bit serious a 10watt interiour light bulb uses an amp an hour. dont know what you imagine 1 amp a day is really going to do. even 3 amps . save up and get a 80watt panel off e bay about 165 quid at least then you have a start of some power . course if you dont use anything on leccy thats different. i have 6x80wt panels on my tyrailer they power a 240volt fridge through an inverter. plus all the accesories in the kitchen. but one would do most i think just for a weekend etc.
