You don't have to have the second fitting, the black will work perfectly fine for all the legal lights you need. The grey is just an auxillary socket mainly used for powering the fridge. Check your Scout socket it may be a 13 pin fitting (depends when fitted) in which case you have both old sockets in one.

I have an Octavia, it has a factory fitted socket, but is 13 pin which is the new standard socket for both cars and caravans. The old system had 2 x 7 pin sockets called 12s & 12n. you can adapt from one system to the other using this. What you will need depends on what your car has and what your prospective caravan has.
Its not uncommon for car dealers to have limited knowledge of towing electrics, so even though you say your car has one socket, count the pins in it to establish if its a 7 pin 12N socket for a trailer or a 13 pin newer socket which incorporates both the old sockets wiring.
Having said all of that, my Octavia, with a factory 13 pin modern socket has blank holes in the fridge and battery charge connections as the VAG group wiring didn't include them in the cars wiring harness until I think 2009. To upgrade is about £300, so I just didnt bother, I dont need a fridge that much.

This adaptor works the other way round, from 7 pin on the car, to 13 pin on a caravan. This however, will only be of use if your caravan has the new 13 pin plug, and still wont work the fridge just the road lights, for the fridge you will still need a 2nd socket on the car, or have the car socket changed to a 13 pin.
There is some detail of the 2x7 pin versus 13 pin here

I should have said that if your prospective caravan has the old system of 2 x 7 pin sockets, theres nothing to stop you just using the one 7 pin plug, road lights will work, all you will not have is fridge and battery charging but only on the move.

Hi David,
I only have the one towing socket on the car as well. It runs all the lights needed to tow a caravan. What I do is charge the leisure battery before I go and take a smart charger with me in case I start running low on 12v power. The fridge is easy too, just freeze all the meat, etc you'll not be using for the next few days, add a freezer block or two and it will work as a coolbox until you get where you're going without using the 12v. I've travelled for apprix 6hrs without food going warm using this method.
When you get set up, just use electric hook up to fridge or gas to remain cool. Your battery might need charging after 5 days to a week if using a lot of 12v things (like water pump, etc as well as lights) so take a little charger if you are on EHU and you'll be fine.
If not on EHU, the fridge will run on gas when you get there. If the leisure battery starts going low (the lights will dim) switch off and use a camping lantern at night and have a water carrier for water instead of the pump.
Some take a spare charged battery as a back up.
Sorry I don't know how you flush a posh 12v flushing loo when the l.battery runs flat!

Hi,
Instead of going to the dealers why not enquire with some Auto electrians or local towbar fitting specialist about having just a 12v supplementry socket fit, it has got to be cheaper than £300, or if your caravan has 13pin plug enquire with them about converting the car to 13 socket so no adaptors needed.

You cannot fit an adaptor to a 12N (7 pin) socket to give you full caravan electrics.
If you want to run fridge and charge battery while towing, you will need to upgrade the car electrics.
Best place to go, as said, is a towbar specialist.
If upgrading, since you say your chosen van has 13 pin (all new vans are now 13 pin), get a 13 pin on the car.
Superior system, and the cost of adding the second 7 pin would be much the same anyway.
Even if the van had 2 x 7 pins, I would still go for 13 pin on the car and convert the van too, it is very easy to do.

Hi, I'm a complete novice just got our first caravan and looking forward to getting out and about. My car has 13 pin socket and the caravan (2003 elddis) just appears to have one 7 pin socket/connection. I picked up a plastic adaptor in halfords when. Collecting the caravan but it appears quite flimsy and so seeing should I pick up a more robust adaptor? Does this mean I just get the driving lights only connected and I can't have fridge cooling while I'm driving. If anyone has any links on explaining /working out the whole electronics /gas /battery I'd really appreciate it as I'm not the most competent in these matters (as you've probably worked out!!)
thanks a mil
Ollie
Are you sure your caravan only has one 7 pin plug? Could there be a second one tucked away somewhere? I have a 1992 Elddis, and that has two plugs although I only use one of them. Even my previous 1988 Elddis had two plugs. So a 2003 model certainly should have both plugs.
As my previous and current cars both only had the one 7 pin socket I simply don’t bother with the second one. My battery is always fully charged before we go away, and we usually only go to places that have EHU anyway, as the fridge in my current Elddis is mains-only. Someone has obviously replaced it at some point, and as it looks good and works perfectly, I haven’t bothered changing it. We just put some frozen stuff in it before we leave home, and it stays cold.
------------- Best Regards,
Colin

This from the caravan club may help.
https://www.caravanclub.co.uk/media/1022790/towbar-wiring-mo.pdf
The standard arrangement on your 2003 van would be 1 black 12n plug and a grey 12s plug. The black will run the caravan road lighting and the grey one the caravan internal 12 volt systems such as water pump and lights, and fridge while towing and charge the caravan battery while towing.
It's quite likely some previous owner has removed the grey plug. If you look under the front of the van you may see some evidence of this.
In practice, if you only stay on sites with mains electric it wont be a problem. If you cool the fridge on mains or gas for a day before travelling you will find the fridge stays cold for several hours.
Similarly, if you are on EHU the battery will be continually charged by teh onboard charger.
