Hi folks

I'm 27 years... of age and I felt myself getting old recently.

A week ago, I was on a site and I noticed that not many of the people were too sociable. By that, I mean when I walked past people, then looked straight ahead, never made eye contact and never mutted a word!

Is this the new generation of campers?

I've always said "Good morning" or "Hello" to everyone on sites previously, but this seems to be a rarity!

Am I missing something or has anyone else had a similar experience?

Marc

Hi Marc, I could give you an other 27 years, And Yes it happens a lot, I tent to say good morning or what ever time it is, if they talk they talk, if not it dose not bother me, pass them again and will say again, if they don’t respond even with a nod, I tend to think they may not be able to speak or talk, then I just nod as I pass, people are people, and if they want to be like that, let them usually find they cant ask for help and make big expensive mistakes because of their attitude. You will meet far more people who will pass the time of day with you, than the ones that don’t even acknowledge you. Ignore it and enjoy your trip.

I find most people do still acknowledge us and it is quite easy to find people to strike up a conversation with.

Yes there are those that don't but no different with neighbours at home really.

I've got a hearing aids, sometimes if theres a lot of noise around I'm not always on the ball. I've found in the past people do think I'm ignorant, believe me I'm anything but, it does worry me sometimes tho. If theres a lot of noise I have been known to turn them off

People that know me just give me a nudge if I'm looking the wrong way

We find that most everyone says good morning and are quite happy to stand and pass the time of day. Wrong site Marc?

The new generation of vanners 30-35 year ages group are the worst offenders and don't speak it used to be on C.C sites that every one spoke but not now .
And as JHSW says there the one's who usually make the expensive mistakes I for one won't lift a finger to help these types where as if someone is friendly and genuinely needs advice and help No problem I'll bend over backwards

It happens.

Lots of reasons, they may have something on their mind, kids or family matters, of just lost in their own little world.

We have found that it takes a day or so for newcomers to be accepted into the site community, and 9 times out of 10 it was the kids playing with each other that broke the ice first.

We were at a show in Essex last year and we were camping as we had the show engine with us on the old trailer, and you'd have thought we were another species! Now we have the new trailer, people are curious and come over and talk.

That's life!

Peter

We're in the 30 - 40 age group and find that usually its people our own age who dont say hello! anti social buggers!! I like to say morning or hello and find it awkward to just walk past someone without acknowledging them, even if its just to moan about the weather...
I guess people are shy or whatever, but meeting people is one of the things i like about caravanning.
I think it pays to be polite and sociable because there is no telling when you might need some help...like us at the weekend when the 'hard standing' we were on was more like granite...couldnt get peg in with our rubber mallet for love nor money! had to go round the 'vans seeking a hammer!

Caravan and camping to my mind now is not the same as it was years ago.I find the ones that have been doing it for years are the ones that are more sociable. It seems now the only thing people are interested in is to out class each other,to see who has the most expensive caravan/tent eg.

Went to this campsite a few times and the people there had younger caravans than mine at the time. They would ignore you,not so much as a good morning then, when i bought my first new van they couldnt wait to get to know you.

How a long for the old days when everybody just enjoyed themselves.

I am 39 next month and OH is 41. I'll always stop for a chat to anyone on site. I've found exactly the same as you, sites are much less friendly than they used to be, that's why we started rallying instead.

The last time we used a site was two years ago and I couldn't believe how unfriendly most people were. I would always "good morning" as I pass someone but in a week on site, only one person even bothered to acknowledge me.

I find CLs much friendlier than sites,m but rallies have a very friendly atmosphere.

I don't think it's an age related thing, more the way society has evolved (or maybe unevolved) over the last 20 or 30 years. Society is far less trusting than it used to be. When I was a child, we never locked the doors on the house or locked the car. Now they don't fly planes over the area I grew up in because someone will nick the wheels off it.

I always say morning evening afternoon , some nod some say nothing, but I'm always polite, some will chat, I think some folk are shy though.I actually got waved at by another caravan on the way back on Tuesday :)
Jeff if we ever meet on a site you will wish you never started a convo with me, I can ramble in for hours you will be trying to get a way lol.
Im 40 and I find the older caravanners are more friendly, like the people next to us last week they were fab, they had their grandchildren with them, they were such a lovely couple.

We always try to speak to everybody and most will respond eventually, but we have found that people get into proper conversation when we are starting to pack up!
The friendliest, by far, are the CL or CS sites. We were on a CS in the lakes in June and it would take 20 - 30 minutes to fill the Aquaroll ... 5 vans on site and everybody friendly
