We have a double dinette and sleep at the front. We have tried every way of sleeping but for comfort have ended up with our heads under the window with the chest of drawers between us. I have found that sleeping across is just too uncomfortable with the mattress running across our bodies (mattress turned over and back rests put in the middle)
However I would really like to sleep with husband in a double bed, does anyone sleep with this layout and a mattress topper.. would it make sufficient difference to someone who is precious about sleep. I dont want to waste such a lot of money if it doesnt. I'd particularly like to hear from someone who couldn't sleep that way without a topper and which one they have.
Also do you have to get a sufficiently expensive topper to make a difference and then is it so thick you cant store it? Many thanks
We were able to take the top off the chest of drawers and as there is plenty of storage space we have stored it in the attic we still have two drawers remaining and use it as a coffee table. We also bought two 3ft x 3" memory foam mattress toppers which we roll up tightly and secure with Velcro straps they then go in the storage under the seats.

I don't think we can take the top of the chest away as it would leave no drawers at all and they are quite valuable for storage (we don't have an abundance its a relatively little van) Plus we can not fill the leftover space as the van is a dealer special so to source extra cushions would be impossible and what would be left would be unsightly if we did remove the drawers- we do use the top too for card and game playing.
So I'm afraid it seems we need to leave it in place..its more a question of whether a topper is going to make a difference sleeping crossways. Anyone???

Always thought it made a difference if the back rests were at the edges and the two bed bits in the middle.
Still sounds like they are a bit hard though. I sleep on a single at the side but I do have a foam matress as it's too hard for me to sleep on comfortable. They certainly make a difference to my bed. I leave them there during the day as well. The whole lot is covered with fitted matress protectors (cotton, cheap from Argos) then I put a throw over those during the day. So it's getting a little like the 'Princess and the Pea' story! LOL!
However my van is very old and I don't mind covering the seats over as they are brown striped moquette stuff from the 80s! I'll eventually get around to recovering them.
You could also consider two raskelf duvalets, they are the biz according to other folk, but very expensive.
We are new to caravaning, and the first time out for 3 nights, after the second night my back and shoulders were aching, and I wasn't looking forward to the 3rd night. I was delighted to get in my bed when I got home.
For the next outing, we bought a 3" kingsized memory foam topper, as per recommendations on here. What a difference it made - it was so comfortable and cosy, and I wasn't in a hurry for my bed at home. The only pain is what to do with such a huge item when you unmake the bed! I ended up storing it in the shower during the day. It's not a good idea to put it outside, in an awning etc, as memory foam is effected by the temperature and won't spring back into shape so quickly if it is cool. I would highly recommend getting a memory foam topper (the 3" is best) - I don't think you will regret it.
One other tip we were given was to make sure it is British made, as some of the foreign ones have nasty toxic smells.
We have the chest of drawers but sleep sideways across the 'van, we've found we can put the larger cushions in sideways rather than lengthways and the two back rests still go in lengthways next to the walls. We do have a mattress topper but until we turned the cushions around it wasn't doing much good I could still feel the gaps. Much better nights sleep now.
We used to turn the cushions over but tried it with them the right way up and had a duvet on top and found it more comfortable. We had two duvet a thick one and a thinner one and depending how warm it was had one or the other on top of us and one underneath.
Now we have a fixed bed, ooh so easy to just jump into a comfy bed.
we are having the same problems, but have found if you put the seats lengtht ways rather than across makes it tons better. we are at the mo in the process of getting mattress topper as well cos the seats have lost their springyness and we do seem to sink into them a bit and wake up with back/shoulder ache.
We have a double dinette caravan - we use the smaller of the two as our bed - it is a bit on the small side but cosy for the two of us.
We use a memory foam topper for comfort - we used to sleep without one but had one for the bed at home, we put this one in the van as we got a memory foam mattress.
I would not be without it now - as it covers the back where the buttons come through which can stick in you.
CatieB - can you not use the other diner instead of the front one?

reading these threads I think we have been very lucky to have found our bed really comfy. We make ours up the same as Tunstallwood but don't have a memory foam topper, just a king size mattress protector beneath the fitted sheet. Perhaps worth trying the larger cushions this way before paying out for the topper?
Hello we are away at the moment trying different layouts.
We can't use the back dinette as our son is in there. But we have tried the mattress length ways rather than across. It is so much better. Not perfect as one back cushion doesn't quite fit without squashing so we are leaving that out and having feet hang a little but much more comfortable
Thanks for the tips everyone
I think a memory foam topper is now on our shopping list.
Those that already have them, how thick are the ones you are using as I see that they come in 1, 2 & 3 inches thick?
I'm not well up on these things :)
