What have you done that you could kick yourself for when "learning" the art of caravanning?

Lesson Number One - Learn how to fill the on board water tank.

Last weekend I was filling up the on board tank. For some reason the water was running straight out from beneath. I had made this mistake before and left myself a note "Make sure valves are closed!" I checked, rechecked. I had made sure they were closed but water was still pouring out from underneath. I was alone and it was a "scorchio" day so running in and out and checking was not keeping my mood in the positive as I got more and more hot and puzzled !! I unscrewed the jubilee clips off the hot water pipes to get to the yellow switch/valve as I thought the yellow valve was stuck and not closing the pipe off. I suddenly realised this pipe is plastic but the pipe the water was coming out of underneath was metal. Ding! Realised I had still got electric switch on "fill" instead of "pump" so I was filling up the cold tank to overflow and the water was coming out of the safety overflow pipe!

Lesson Number two - keys!
Having started the weekend with a stressful hour messing about with water, I then had a lovely weekend completely chilling at the lovely peaceful site and took a leisurely time packing up a little bit at a time as I was alone and had arranged a late stay. Was very chilled and quietly congratulating myself for managing even emptying the dreaded toilet (Complete with rubber gloves but needs must despite the funny looks I get!!).
Last job disconnect the electric then all ready for the off. Where were the keys!! Had them 5 minutes ago now nowhere to be seen. Spent hour and a half turning caravan inside out- unpacking the car, the case, dirty washing, even had to go through the rubbish in the bin yuk!!
Apologies all round for holding the pitch longer and site owner very understanding. Just about to give up when I looked right under the caravan. The keys must have been catapulted out of the lock when the flap dropped down when I removed the toilet holding tank! Doh another learning curve.

I will be wearing the keys round my neck in future on a big red ribbon so if you see someone with the ribbon round their neck - its me!! Don't ask for help from me unless you have a desire for a "Carry on Camping" sort of experience!!

I lost the keys that we were given on a site on our second caravan trip (I'd had them 5 minutes before we were pulling off). We tipped the caravan upside down,, the car upside down, I emptied my handbag twice, we just couldn't find them. I spoke to the site warden and apologised, they were really kind and just asked that if I found them upon returning home could I please post them to the site.

Well we got home, unpacked everything, still no keys. Getting sorted for work the following morning I swapped handbags and yes, you've guessed, there were the keys, not a small bunch mind but a great long tag was attached to it. I still have no idea how I missed them.

Ah .... that lost key moment eh!

Not while camping, but a few years ago we had found a cheap holiday flying out from Edinburgh Airport (live in the North East), so drove up there and parked in the airport car park.

As we did would not be using the car while on holiday to keep the keys safe I hid the car keys inside a pair of shoes while unpacking at the hotel (you know, one of those safe places you will always find them). It ended up I never wore those shoes while away so they were packed in the suitcase again for the return trip.

On arriving back at Edinburgh Ariport we found the car then searched my pockets for the keys ....... and searched ...... then searched the pockets of the bags and suitcase and could not find them. Started thinking of how my dad could get access toour house to get the spare set of car keys and drive the couple of hours or so to us.

It was only after a few of those words that you utter in these circumstances, that another "organised search" of the suitcase (ie fling things around a bit) that the car keys dropped out of my safe storage shoe.

You know, for some reason, I have never used that "safe storage" place again.

Keys - was forever losing mine until I screwed a cup hook over the sink. That is now where they reside unless I'm using them! I have a caravan key on my car keys, so I can't forget the caravan key!

Flip - it seems every time I go out I have a different learning curve to fulfil - something I've not come across before but need to learn how to do!

I will very soon have to change the gas bottle as it's getting low. Haven't done that since I originally put it on so will have to google instructions. I remember it was hard and bought a special spanner for the job (propane) so now I need to find that before I can use it! (in a safe place....)

We left the caravan in Aviemore last winter, the first time we have ever taken a seasonal pitch. Taking a sprint start from home (Leeds) on Friday night we congratulated ourselves on getting all the kids and everything in the car and heading north in time to possibly beat the gates closing in Aviemore site at 10pm.

Had nearly reached Scotch Corner before the realisation that we did not have the caravan keys with us.

The thing that sticks in my mind from when I owned a caravan was the time I unhitched on a 'flat' field and forgot to put the handbrake on. I moved the car out of the way so I could push the caravan into position and got out of the car just in time to spot the caravan starting to roll. Luckily it was light and I managed to stop it and push it back into position then applied the brake...phew!

The annoying thing was the giggling caravanners opposite who were so amused they didn't think to shout a warning!

Perhaps a good indication why a caravan needs to be insured when unhitched which mine wasn't at the time

When we used to keep our van in storage we had to remove our gas bottles every time we left it there and more than once we have arrived on site to find we have no gas bottles. Luckily, we don't use storage sites now x

Where do I start??

Keys for the security post went awol just as we were ready to move the van off the drive...... The keys are still missing to this day! Replacement keys are now with the van keys.

When the husband says 'are you finished with the waste?' when packing up- he also means the loo cassette is going as well as the waste hog so thats not the time to start cleaning and flushing it through!

After having our van serviced (was for the first time - we are relatively new at this lark) always check that he hasnt left the shower tap on! We only use our shower for storage! It took ages to realise where and why all the water had gone (from a full water hog!!!!) -all over coats and other junk!

Keys, keys ,KEYS. Always putting them down and cant find them. Course you need them on you when setting up and taking down, to open cassette door, hook up door etc. After three years my missus, fed up with the swearing and constant 'Where did I put those bloody keys' has put them on a lanyard so when we arrive on site they hang around Dads neck. Now I'm just really annoyed about these keys that keep swinging around and hanging down in front of me, obscuring my view. Great fun when knocking pegs in.
Keys, keys, KEYS!
Someone go on Dragons Den with a system for vans like these key-less cars where, you just go nearby with a blipper in your pocket and they automatically open, and I'll give you the money!

Keys seem to be big problem!
When OH heard of my problem with keys he suggested one of these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170567595536

Think I will get one then keys will be with me most of the time but wont be dangling in the way like martinez and his lanyard!!

Trouble is they attach to a belt............. now where did i put my belt?

I had my first oops after my fifth outing in our tin box.Unable to hitch up my caravan due to a caravan placed too close to mine plus on a slight hill so may of struggled to pull off due to the poor bank holiday weather we just had.

So went to plan B. Rotate the caravan 90 degrees so we can gain access plus have our cars front wheel drive on tarmac so we had enough traction. (No guessed wrong did not roll down the hill)

So hooked up, now heres the picture its now pooring the boss is outside now wet cold fed up.

Lights checked, engine on. Clutch released I shout is it moving. Clutch now smelling. Switch off have a think. Have a another go thinking the hill was a struggle. Wheel spun then. The big bell was ringing. Engine off.

Got out of car. My neighbour then shouts. Have you left the hand brake on your van. STUPID sod I am.

After going back in the car with embarassment & a smelly engine we were off.

Wont make that error again. (fingers crossed)
