Just got back from the weekly mouse hunt at Alcatraz, the Cassoa Gold site where Bertha our caravan lives. It would seem that a van has been stolen from the site, despite the 4 sets of gates you have to go through. It looks as if the thief has been let on and off the site, by a nice friendly good mannered caravanner, just like you and me.

Be vigilant, folks, if you use a storage facility. The nice person who says "I'll follow on and lock up" could be a crim!

When i was followed into storage i always locked the gate once in and on the way out. we never left the storage unit with another caravan following, pick your moment and lock them in. never leave the gate open for ANYONE.
if they are genuine they will let themselves out.
sorry to be so up front with this but dont trust anyone, that other nice caravaner just like you,??? could be any robbers dog.

Hi, At our storage you have a transponder fitted in the van and a fob in the car, open one gate without leaving the car, drive through, the gate shuts behind you, then the second gate opens, same system on the way out, you cannot open the gate with your fob unless the transponder on the caravan matches your fob, I go on there regularly servicing vans using my fob (with permission of the site owner / work van has to registered with the office) so i could not tow another caravan out, works very well, gives us 24/7 access.

I think the security system where mine is stored would be pretty hard to beat. They have computer records of every caravan/motorhome on the site and the make, model, colour and reg number of all the owners' vehicles, each vehicle's details linked to each particular caravan/motorhome. The main entrance has a huge electronic fob operated sliding gate and about 6ft from either side of the gate is a white line on the floor - on entry you drive through the gate and stop at the white line till the gate has completely closed behind you, this stops any other vehicle from following you in. You do the same in reverse on exit, so if there was anyone in there who shouldn't be they wouldn't be able to get out. And no-one can just walk in as the ground sensor for the gate only operates when a vehicle drives over it. The whole lot is overseen by 24/7 cctv, and anyone seen not keeping to the entry/exit rules is asked to remove their caravan and leave the site.

Thanks so much fo the thumbs up, Philippa.  Wished I'd read this before going out to the beer and skittles with the Brewood Singers - I'd have enjoyed it much more - it's been on my my mind all night.  I'm relieved, but will pop up sometime tomorrow to check around.  Need to check one or two thing for we get away at half term.

Thank goodness for loo bags!  As I said to Phillipa, 'I'm relieved'

I'll let you into a little secret Jeff (but don't tell anyone).  When we had our last van stolen in May 2009, we had just returned from the May Day Bank Holiday Weekend in something of a rush (on the B.H. Monday).  Our van went on the Wednesday, and we wer pretty shocked about it all.  When I had calmed down a bit and started to think a bit more rationally I realised they had saved me the bother of one little job - emtying the loo.  That would have been a nice little present for them.    The rediculous thing is that I felt quite guilty and embarrassed about it.

Our site is a little more primitive (but still Gold). You have to go into the store and sign out a key in order to open the main gate.

Unless the car / caravan behind me (to enter or exit) has a key, i shut and lock the gate behind me. This may appear rude to others, but hopefully if everyone does the same there won't be any thefts.

we store on a cassoa gold . to get in you need a fob to operate the 1st barrier, you drive in and have to wait for the barrier to go down fully before you can open the 2nd barrier. Only once has some drove in to space between barriers behind me and i went into reception and told them the reg number of the car then weaited to see if they had a fob to get out, thankfully they were legit and apologised for sneaking in behind us.

On our Gold site you have an electronic pass card that lets you in however you need it to leave. If it shows that you have already left, the gate will not open.
The owner has strict rules that no one is to allow another vehicle to follow them in. Penalty is that you will be asked to leave immediately with no warning. You also have to sign a piece of paper to that effect.
We agree with the hard line that he is taking as we can sleep soundly knowing that the caravan is securely stored.

We have our caravan in a gold storage yard and you have a key to open the gate but you must close it behind you, even if there are other people following you. We went with the inlaws to pick up the caravans and was very tempted to close the gate behind us and make them get out of the car .
