Following yesterday's Gale Force Winds across Central Scotland I got the dreaded phone call from my Caravan storage yard to tell me that my Caravan had blown over onto it's side and is seriously damaged.

I have got an immaculate Lunar Zenith 6 (2003) and paid £6000 for is about 10 months ago.

I an ensured through Caravan Guard for market value replacement. I phoned them today and they said they would appoint a loss adjuster to review my claim.

I am 99% certain the caravan is a write-off (photo's to follow) but am terrified that Caravan Guard try and shaft me with their "market value" of my van.

Does anyone have any experience of claiming in similar circumstances through Caravan Guard?

How are they going to work out the market value? (I insured it with a market value of £6000).

Will I get the full £6000 minus my £100 deposit.

Not sure if my awning is damaged yet or not. If it's not can I still claim for it given that it probably won't fit a replacement van?

Any advice / reassurance you can provide me during this fingernail biting process would be welcome!

Sorry to hear your news. Can't offer any advice from experience with your insurer but would suggest you do all the research you can on what your age and model of caravan is selling for and don't accept their first offer unless your are 100% happy with it.

Sorry to hear of this. As with any claim, first off - *READ THE POLICY*.

Pay particular attention to the wording on damage claims. Specifically, what does it say re a scenario where repair costs exceed value. No insurer will pay repair costs at £1000 on an item worth £100, and they will say this.

If, as is likely, repair costs DO exceed value, what does the policy say ? Will they then pay an "Agreed Value" (probably unlikely) or the Market Value. If the latter, it's unlikely to be worth what you paid for it 10 months ago, so you won't get that.

As the insured you have a common law and contractual duty to minimise your loss by recovering contents (not original fittings included in the insured value) so do this now if you can and whilst you're waiting for the adjuster, do as much research on 2012 values for 'vans in the same condition/age as your Lunar.

Forewarned is forearmed.

Remember, as Tony suggested above, the claims offer process is a negotiation, not a precise science. If they offer low, keep calm, and respond with your evidence. Let them know that others of their Policyholders will be watching this.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Agree with above. It's a negotiation. If you don't feel confident get someone to negotiate on your behalf.

Hope you told your insurers it was in storage.

We had to make a claim this year when our caravan was burnt by an arsonist and we lost everything in it.  What we did to bring the settlement figure up was print off some identical (or very similar) caravans for sale with the prices that we could buy at and although they didn't pay up to the figure we insured to we weren't far off in the end. What we did find was that we had more contents/equipment (value) than we were insured for and so lost out on that a bit but obviously we were to blame for that as we should have looked at it more thoroughly. They did take a little while to payout - about 2 months in the end. Don't forget, you don't need to accept their first offer.  Hopefully you will be able to rescue some of your contents. Good luck!

I am very sorry to hear of your loss Tazhearts, we do seem to have a couple of things in common in that we both own a Lunar Zenith and have them insured by the same company.

As goes for the value of the caravan and contents, Caravan Gaurd valued mine using Glasse's Guide, and then rang Lunar to confirm the year my caravan was Manufactured as it wasnt listed, the Lunar Zenith 4 having stopped being produced in 2005, when ours was clearly a 2006 season caravan. The value of our caravan last June was £6000, and we had additional contents insurance of £1500, which included the value of our awning. I am telling you this in a hope it may give you some idea of the actual value of your caravan today.

If you bought your caravan from a dealer, then the price would have included a sum added by the dealer to cover any possible work done by them under any warantee offered, which would be above the price asked if you had bought privately.

I will dig out some paper work i have later, that states Lunar secondhand values that was given to us last year when we were trying to value ours for insurance purposes. Im fairly sure that it will give the value of a 2003 Lunar 6 and provide some kind of ballpark figure to base your negociations, i will post up these values later.

I hope this helps a little,

Julia

Sorry to read of your bad luck.

http://www.caravanpriceguide.com/ This site gives a FORECOURT valuation for your caravan of £5200.

I would go online and try to find a van like yours for sale now, as this is what you will have to pay for a replacement van.

An Insurance assessor will start low and it is up to you to provide evidence as to replacement cost leading hopefully to an increased settlement offer.

It is unlikely that your awning has been damaged and hopefully the contents damage will be limited. The awning will still fit another 2003 Lunar Zenith 6 and I would think it is not the Insurers responsibilty should you decide to buy a different van.

Your Lunar may still be repairable, but you need to get a couple of quotes if this is possible - starting with where you bought it [if retail].

Have you a Motor Mover fitted to your van? - cost to move it should I think be considered.

Good luck, stay calm and be prepared.

Sorry for your loss.

One thing I would ensure is that you get to the van asap and remove all of your personal belongings, such as the awning etc, otherwise these will be taken away with the van.

So sorry to hear of your misfortune.

Is the £6000 insurance just for the van or is it van and contents? If it is the latter, then you may have a little flexibility in apportioning van and contents - if you see what I mean.

Have a read of this thread along the same lines. I posted some comments on process and a link to the treating people fairly principles backed by the FSA. Hopefully it may give you some optimism

What do you think they will do with my van if they agree my Van's a write-off. Will they leave it with me? I could strip it and sell some parts maybe?

If they write it off they will pay you out an agreed sum, and the caravan will become their property and be removed from your custody. Some damaged caravans do get sold on via auction sites/houses just as written off cars do for spares or scrap metal, but I think you can rest assured that if your caravan is economically repairable then they will do so, they do tend to go for the cheapest option for themselves to fund wherever possible.

I once had an Avondale caravan, that was involved in a nasty accident at three years old, where a complete side and the front was damaged when hit by a lorry traveling in the opposite direction, plus the hitch twisted off by the impact. The car was also a total write off at 18mths old, but the caravan was worked on and returned to us as road worthy, although it was easy to see that it had been repaired by the slight differances in colour. We never really felt the same about it after the accident, and we traded it in the following season for a new one.

Good luck anyway, and i hope you have your claim settled promptly and fairly.

Julia

I think once you've agreed then the van becomes their property, same as when our car got stolen and written off, we we allowed to go and collect cd.s and things but nothing else like the roof bars wheel cover it all belonged to them.
I'm sorry to hear of your damaged van, I hope you get it all sorted out soon.
