I am still looking for my ideal crappy with my budget of £1200.

Off today to view a monza 300/2 1991 and a Bucaneer (not sure of year yet). Monza asking £1200 and £1400 bucaneer, the Bucaneer has an awning with it.

Anything in paticular to look out for on these 2 vans other than the usual?

The Monza is most appealing so far because it is basic with little to go wrong a lighter.

Take a damp  meter.  Those prices seem quite high for a 20 year old 'van??

Those prices do seem a bit on the high side, but its coming towards the time of year when everyone is buying, so they do get good prices. As said previously, damp is the main thing to check for, everything else is easy enough to mend, but damp can be very expensive. be careful, if it seems ok wave a wad of cash under there nose, its amazing how that brings the price down.
We hope to welcome you into the open arms of the CCC very soon, keep in touch, we are hoping to organise some meets this season.

Things to look out for or check:
* damp
* delamination of floor (particularly in kitchen area and entrance)
* strange smells
* window seals
* damaged trim
* do blinds/flyscreens all work?
* how much support do the cushions give?
* bed slats
* tyres and rear lights
* interior lights
* fridge
* heater
* cooker
* water system
* brakes
 Things to ask:
* does the van have any service history?
* when was the van last serviced?
* how long have they owned it for?
* why are they selling?

A genuine buyer will have no problem with you having a good poke around and demonstrate the water/heating/lights etc.... or allow you to put the beds up etc....

If possible, take an experienced caravanner with you.

Ask what (if any) extras are included - awning, water and waste containers, battery, gas bottle, hook up lead etc....

Before parting with any money, check that your tow car is capable of pulling the caravan! Ideally the caravan should weigh no more than 85% of your vehicle's kerbweight.

I bought a cheap, elderly van for £495 and am very pleased with it - I spent the winter doing her up and have just completed my first full season with her.

Yes I have a mid 80s Monza that is dry & solid. As they are fairly basic they are reasonably easy to check for damp. Just check for soft spots & discolouration everywhere you can inside & check that floor is solid. There seems to be plenty of old Monzas about which suggests they were fairly well put together. For the asking price the 'van needs to pretty spotless & ready for use.

Only one thing to check - make sure there's no damp.
For your £1200 I'd expect a spot on van not a crappy old tub. You can pick these things up sub £500.

My very first caravan was a 1982 Monza owned from new, and the only one I ever owned over the years that had a solid ply floor without any insulation or sandwich type of construction of any kind

Good lightweight caravans but without the level of insulation found on more expensive models at the time. Although mine had the plastic windows, they were only single glazed, and still prone to condensation running down the insides on chilly early and late season trips out. If its also got the original seating pads, these would probably need an upgrade of some kind to make them comfortable as the originals were only about 4ins thick and needed an airbed under them at the time we owned ours to make the bed comfortable for sleeping without 'grounding' at the hip. The originals also had no shower, cassette loo or hot water system and the cold water was fed by a whale foot pump and single tap to the kitchen sink. We kept her for three years before selling her onto a dealer as part of a divorce settlement, nothing to do with caravan ownership I may add lol!

I would also say those prices are high for such old vans. But if they are good, & going to last, then may be worth it.

Trade is still slow right now, so it's still a buyers market & there are many "dreamers" out there. There are also many small-time dealers, or wannabe dealers who will charge over the odds.

You're obviously going for a private sale, as you've said so in the title. Which is good, as £1200 won't get you anywhere with a dealer.

I wish you the best of luck. I paid around £500 for my 1990(ish) Lunar Clubman. It was very well cared for, but had stood for a couple of years. Only now am I finding a few "soft spots" around a couple of the windows. This doesn't mean too much to me, as I still reckon I got a bargain, but I was lucky. I never tested any of the systems, but knew I had a genuine seller. He had advertised on ebay without any pictures. He liked me & we got on, it was only a few miles up the road & we struck a deal for a quick sale. I'm still very happy, & the couple of little soft spots will give me something to do in the autumn.

Best of luck, don't be afraid to have a really good poke about.

the prices are steep but if I can find a really good condition caravan I would be ok paying this, but I do expect a van at this price in a private add to be in good condition, otherwise they are only worth a few hundred.

The Monza i have viewed is no good, defo no worth £1200. I think the guy is a pert time dealer doing up old vans. All of the wall and ceiling coverings brand new. Although he claims they are original. What is he covering up. The rear window was broken with a big gap, although he said he would try and fix it- doesn't really add up to the excel condition advertised. So will not be buying.

The Bucanner was very nice, with a good awning and a motor mover. Owner assured no damp and seemed genuine. I couldn't find any damp but still think a bit expensive at £1400, think if I decide to buy I would be looking to make an offer below this.

I really only looked at ebay when I was hunting. I put in a search for caravan, within my price range & within a radius of 75 miles (which was way over what I was willing to travel, but I find ebay's range finder is not very accurate at all, & if I put 50miles in it would actually miss out some which were quite close). & I let it email me whenever something was added within my parameters. (it's still doing so actually, just so I can make sure I got a good deal, you understand )

It was only a matter of time until something turned up. I tried Gumtree & preloved, neither of which ever turned anything up. Ebay is where you will find a bargain, you just have to be prepared to sift through a lot of cráp & bide your time.

The Buccaneer sounds OK, & a motor mover does increase the price of an oldie quite substantially.

Hope you find it soon (I think you will).

Monzas are nice little vans and there are several with a similar design. Some years ago I bought an Avondale Perle Orestes 2 berth which is almost identical in design to the Monza 2 berth but had slightly better upholstery. I paid about £300 and sold it a couple of years later for the same...but it was in excellent condition.

As previously stated, please don't be tempted to buy anything with soft panelling. By the time damp has surfaced or softened the panelling it has done untold damage inside the walling.

Take your time and don't get frustrated and buy something you later regret...there are a lot of caravans with serious problems out there and the owners won't tell you because they just want to get rid.

Keep an eye on what caravans are actually selling for rather than what they are advertised at, and this will give you a good idea what they are worth.

Good luck...yours is out there somewhere

have you got a local ad trader paper ,auto trader im sure that auto trader has a caravan sale section ,one thing i would advise is look up where the curtains hang/blinds and see is there are signs of damp ie very rusty marks ,we didnt do this when we bought a van and the wood was totally rotten round the side and from windows ,it all looked great till i was sitting in the van and happened to look up at the sagging rusty mess ,this wasnt visible when we were standing checking the van ,cost us a fortune to redo as the water had been running off awning rails down through the van ,even floor was rotten which wasnt visable as vynil was laid ,oh if only we had taken a damp meter !!!!,hope you get a good van worth the money ,

Take your time and have a good look around, I'm sure in the next month or two there will be lots to choose from, most people wait till spring to sell.  Good luck!

Also check the front shelf (especially if it has 3 separate front windows). They can suffer from water ingress there, which runs down the windows & rots out the front shelf (usually the roof of the gas locker).

This area can also suffer from nothing other than condensation, but it's usually a good indicator of troubles ahead.

There's always going to be an area you haven't checked, especially if you like the 'van & are enthusiastic about it.

Run your hands along the walls, feeling for sponginess as well. I missed the lower section of washroom wall in my father's caravan when he bought it, which turned out to be soft (another problem I've yet to sort out).

2nd hand 'vans will never be perfect though (or very rarely), you can only do your best when looking at them.
