I heard a Calor representitive on the radio yesterday saying that there is a current spell of gas canisters being stolen so keep yours out of sight. Its not the gas they are after its the steel, and as scrap metal prices increase these toerags have resorted to lifting anything metal that they can get their hands on. Calor alone have 'lost' over 100,000 bottles in a year of the 200,000 total that is said to cost the industry £9 Million.

Our local tips (sorry recycling stations) are free. They will take empty gas bottles which they store in a locked cage. I have found the staff very helpful.
We also have scrap men who come round most days, they will take any old washing machines etc(and probably anything which is not nailed down!)
Prefer to use the official place as the cash raised benefits ratepayers.

I cant get hold of the calor lites anymore. My local agent has had them on order for 4 weeks now and they have said they can't get them from calor at the moment as so many are being stolen because the aluminium is so valuble. I have ended up having to get a steel for now.

Thats a bit strange as Calor Lite bottles are made from steel and have less weight due to the thinner walls. If someone was wanting to nick bottles for scrap I would have thought they would have gone for bottles of a heavier construction to get more scrap value. Sounds like your local Calor agent is talking out of his...

right you are
http://www.calor.co.uk/outdoor-living/caravanning/
The Calor Lite® is our newest product and is specially designed to help caravanners reduce the nose weight of the caravan. It's made from lightweight steel weighing 50% less than our original cylinder, and has a GasTrac® gauge which shows you when you're running low on gas. No wonder Calor LPG has long been a firm favourite with caravanners.

Calor only have themselves to blame. If taking on a bottle for the first time a £25 deposit is required. After two or three years you are lucky to get back £5. If you got back your full deposit maybe people would return bottles instead of dumping them!
