I am really pleased as just in time for the bank holiday we have recieved our plate upgrade meaning that we can now carry 330kg of stuff in the van rather than the 150kg that the old plate said :)

How can you do this? Surely the 'van only can carry what its built to carry? Perhaps i'm being a bit dim too!
Some van's are built on running gear [chassis tyres etc] of greater carrying capacity than they choose to quote the van's MTPM as.
Because the UK is besotted with the 85% weight ratio it is in the interest of the caravan maker to suggest the weight of the van is low; therefore when applying the 85% ratio guide it suits more cars so more sales.
As JTQU says our van has been built on a chassis that is capable of carrying more than the 1650 that is given as the mtplm this enables more cars to legally tow it . however the chassis is actually able to carry 1800kg so we contacted our dealer and asked for new plates for it dealers will charge about £50 for this they put in a request to the manufacturers .each plate is made individually and has to be re certified .we didn't replate our last van as we would have only gains 5kg so not worth it.

I have just put in a order with the dealer for a plate upgrade for my swift kudos 636 upping it to 1725kg it will help a little as the mover is about 60kg. We shouldn't need all of it but at least it will give me a bigger margin for carrying stuff and less chance of accidentally going over weight.

I am surprised its only going up to 1725kg as ours is a sterling Eccles sport 636 and Is upgraded to 1800kg ??
Lassie we asked the dealer we bought it off but apparently there is a second plate in the front locker and that will tell you hth
Surely this is a paper exercise only? Does it give you real assurance of increased load ing capacity? I thought you`d put as little stuff in the van as poss, more in the towing vehicle for stability . . guess it shows what I know lol

No it's a legality issue it's Very unlikely that I will overload my van now with 4 children space is an issue in the car but it now means webcam take the bikes for the children which we have not been able to do before .
The only reason the weight is lower is to allow more cars to legally tow
Just out of curiosity what is the % ratio of the van's weight to that of the car's kerb weight now?

82%ish neither van or car are on whattow car, so I have altered the figures so they are as close as i can get (i had to put the weight as 1837kg whilst the plate max is 1800 but can't change it any lower )

You are correct could have gone to 1800 but thought would just up it to what we may need which was 1725
