Hi there

We are currently just starting our caravan hunt. So hopefully in a month or so time we should have our caravan, even though its a mine field on what to get. We keep seeing so many nice ones lol
We would like to join a club and was wondering, which is best, the Caravan Club or the caravan and camping club.

Caravan Club (CC) has about 220 of it's own sites with about half open to members only and over 2500Cl's ( small 5 five van independant sites of variable standard licensed by the club for members only ) , the standard of it's sites is consistently high over the whole network, it provides every service that a caravanner could need and all the services are comparable with the best of service that you can find anywhere. When you arrive at a club site you book in and pay your fees, no deposits are taken so the whole fee is paid at this time, you are then given information about the site and are told to go go and have a look at the pitches available ( all empty pitches are available ) choose one, set up and then let the wardens know where you have gone. Should you decide for whtever reason that you need to leave before the date that you  have paid till, you can inform the wardens that you are leaving and will receive a refund of all fees for the days that you have paid for but will not be staying for.

Camping and Caravanning Club (CCC) has about 110 sites of it's own a handful  (6 at the last count )  of which are members only  and a network of about 1500 CS's ( like CL's ), the standard of the sites over the whole network is of a more variable standard with the best sites comparing favourably with the CC sites. It also provides a full range of high quality services for the caravanner that are just as good as those provided by the CC. When you arrive at a club site you book in and pay the remainder of your fees ( a deposit will be taken when you book which  if you cancel more than 7 days in advance you get   back, within 7 days you lose  ), the warden will decide where you are to pitch and will escort you to it and ensure that you have pitched precisely as he requires. Should you need to leave for any reason the fees that you have paid will be forfeit ( though in some circumstances by special request to head office giving circumstances and doctors notes be placed on account for you to use in the rest of the year )

I have been a member of the CC for 19 years and have never regretted it, I have been a member of the CCC on two occasion in the last four years and have on both occasions resigned it just did not suit me. I know of a lot of people who like and use the CCC so I would suggest that it is worthwhile joining both clubs and seeing which one suits your purpose best

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Easy decision here. Ask anyone who is currently a member of the Camping & Caravanning Club about their website. They reckon it's a complete nightmare and not very user unfriendly to say the least but the problems with the Caravan Club are minimal and a much easier website to use. There was a thread only recently regarding this, see the link below.

We're in both and use both. The CC has a silly booking system where the bookings for the year open in the first week in December: because there is no deposit people tend to (we do) make all their CC bookings on that day. Because the weekends get booked up quickly on the popular sites it is difficult to book a full week, especially in school holidays (this has been my experience).

The CCC has a silly website which is very user unfriendly indeed.

Try both. We stayed in the CC in order to use Crystal Palace and Pembrey, but we have also managed to visit Chatsworth (last weekend, booked in December!!) We find the silly booking system annoying, but this is horses for courses and I know the next person to post will disagree. We prefer the CCC as booking is easier, despite the silly website.

Keep calm and go camping....

Well I certainly would not recommend that the decision on which club to join should be uniquely based on the quality or lack of its web site. Though I cant not argue with agreeing that the C&CC's present offering is as awful as anybody could dream up. The decision should be on what membership of that club can offer you, rather than its on screen presence.
We have been a 30 plus year members of both and they have each strengths and weaknesses. In respect to the CC a huge weakness is its lack of week-end main site nights to cope with the membership numbers. Its out sold itself and can't deliver any more. Just check site availability on its excellent web site before assuming you simply join and go off caravanning every sunny week end or school holiday, its not like that if its a main site you seek.
What I always recommend newcomers is that they for two or three years join both but make a point of actually using the range of offering the clubs can provide. Then they can know what suits them and which site best delivers. It also helps get away from this culture of 'my club is the best' that seems to permeate and take over any discussion on this subject. As I said with 30 plus years you begin to know that facets of each are better that the others but overall they can be used to complement each other rather than rival. So we are stuck with paying two dues but that is small beer compared to the cost of equipping yourself to be a caravanner.
Make a point of trying the 5 van sites, the rallying systems and the special holiday site meets as well as the club administered sites themselves. Oh and don't fall into the trap of believing 'tenters' are a sub species, we all want much the same thing out of camping.

Neither. There's plenty out there without joining the "clubs" which in my view offer little and are expensive in everything they do.

The CC sites may cost more than private sites but then the quality of the site tends to be better on CC sites, if it is a larger site that you are after. Just my own personal view drawn from experience. CC members can use the network of CLs, the five caravan sites, so that membership of the CC gives you access to those. Many a little gem tucked away all over the place. The CC has negotiated cheaper entry, or two for one entry, at many tourist locations for CC members ("Days Out"). The CC provides a free advisory service which you may wish to benefit from whilst you are buying your first van and trying it out. The CC also provides insurance and breakdown cover (green flag) for members. I find their insurance expensive though and not as extensive as the cover I have. You do get a monthly magazine which has a wealth of information. Booking sites via their web site is simple and so, so convenient.

The C&CC provide very similar facilities (other than the days out bargains). We do not think that C&CC sites are as well appointed as CC ones. They are wonderful sites, its the finish thats different. Booking sites via their web sites can be a challenge sometimes. We have been in both for years but very rarely use the C&CC facilities. Each year we think about giving up membership but end up with them "just for one more year". We did use their sites extensively when the kids were young and we were tenting, so leaving would be like losing a relative I think. At least the monthly magazine covers the cost of the annual fee. My own view is that the club is more tenting orientated than caravanning but maybe tenters think its the other way round

Join both and see how you feel at the end of the year.

Phil

I am a member of both and can't justify it in financial terms but I enjoy staying on club sites.  You can get lovely private sites but on club sites there are mainly club members and they seem to respect the site and facilities.

what are you hoping to get from the clubs?   As has been said, there are plenty of non club sites to choose from which are excellent and possibly cheaper.  Our membership of the C&CC is worth every penny as we go on their weekend meets and as they are mainly non booking/turn up kind we can decide at the last minute if we want/can go. We have had some very enjoyable breaks with them and are starting to make friends.  We joined the CC this year and have been on a couple of their rallies but they all need to be booked so if you have a family like mine (elderly relative. grown up children, young daughter all needing help/transport etc) it can be quite awkward to plan too far ahead.

Let us know what you're looking for and then we can help you decide based on our experiences.

We are members of both clubs for the CLs and CSs, we very rarely use club sites as we prefer to use our caravan loo and shower anyway. We have found some lovely little sites this way (and a few horrors!)

Maybe my previous posting was a bit unfair actually by judging just on their websites only but can confirm that I am a member of the C&CC myself and have been for the past seven years. I have never been a member of the CC but I was only going by other people's comments that's why I posted the related link. At the end of the day this website offers reviews on camp sites and we read them to to see how others have judged them on their good and bad points which is beneficial to us all as UKCS members so my input in my previous post was based on the recent reviews of the two major clubs websites and nothing more. However, we have to take into consideration that a clubs website is a sector that is actually part financed with your membership fee so if it's not user friendly in comparison to other websites then there is obviously a lack of either understanding or investment in this particular area that needs to be upgraded accordingly in the interest of the members in todays electronic market. The internet is now a major source for most big companies for online bookings, purchases and many other related topics so the fact of the matter is that are you getting real value for money if you are having difficulty with any of your online bookings? This is only part of the big picture of course in what the two clubs have to offer but I have been informed by many over the past years that although the Caravan Club is more expensive in more ways than one, the extra costs is however reflected in their site locations and surroundings including many of the certificated listed sites as well.

I certainly don't agree that the site locations for the CC are better. It's all swings and roundabouts some are some aren't and without staying in them all its impossible to make such a sweeping statement.

Thanks for all your informative replies. The benefits we are looking from a club is cheaper rates for clean sites and hopefully discounts on caravan insurance ect.

So far its looking like most people prefer CC.

This year we are trying 2 CL sites so will see what we think.
