Had a disaster last weekend whereby the jockey wheel snapped under the weight of the caravan (possibly due to being unclamped at a slight angle).
It is currently being fixed so has a happy ending, but I'm now paranoid and was wondering whether anybody removes the jockey wheel when towing so that it doesn't hit speed bumps, kerb etc. and keeps the wheel damage free.

I don't believe that once the van is on the car you will not be able to get the jockey wheel out unless you are talking about just taking the wheel off.
I arrived in Spain for the Winter Rally with a puncture in the jockey wheel tyre and I know that the van had to be lifted quite high to get the whole thing out.

If your Jockey Wheel is attached by a side bracket, then it is easily removed.
I do believe that some folks tow with the jockey wheel removed.

Under the Road Traffic Act- Construction and Use Regulations.
Below is an extract from the Construction and Use Regulations paragraph 86A.'
(2) The requirements of this paragraph, in relation to a motor vehicle drawing a trailer, are that a secondary coupling is attached to the motor vehicle and trailer in such a way that, in the event of the separation of the main coupling while the trailer is in motion,—(a) the drawbar of the trailer would be prevented from touching the ground; and (B ) there would be some residual steering of the trailer.
If the wheel was wound up I can't really see what much use it would serve if the caravan became unhooked, but there you go.

If the trailer became detatched from the vehicle whilst on the road, I doubt very much if the jockey wheel would support the weight of the caravan/FC crashing down onto it anyway.
Another case of an ill thought through law. ![](https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/forum_images/smiley36.gif)

We often detach ours. Easy with a side mounted bracket.
I believe the RTA rule above relates to the breakaway cable - unfortunately virtually all breakaway cable do not comply as they are designed to apply the trailer brake and then snap off. Unless this extract relates to an unbraked trailer when the secondary coupling would probably comply.

About two month ago my van came of tow ball due to me rushing luckly no damage was done due to the fact i was driving about 5 mph and my jocky wheel was still attached this saved damage to a frame.

My jockey assembly fixes fairly high and I've never had the need to remove it, but I know the in-laws used to remove the thing when towing.
There's pro's and con's with it (one 'pro' illustrated by Mr Grumpy above), but the securing of the jockey and clamp is in my post-hitch 'mental checklist'.

Surely though, the jockey and clamp should tolerate the expected nose-weight of the van?

This is in relation to a motor vehicle drawing an an unbraked trailer not a caravan, some trailers do not have a jockey wheel at all.
Unbraked trailers require a chain to keep it attached to the vehicle,a braked trailer or caravan have a cable that pulls the handbrake on and then is designed to snap so the van or trailer should come to a halt separate from the vehicle.A wound up jockey wheel would not make much difference if the hitch hits the ground so taking it off will not matter unless the wheel is so low that it hits first.

I thought that too, but it didn't. Lol. It's a bad design really. All the weight is applied to a thin bolt and small piece of metal holding it in. The bolt just tore through the metal!

Hi, only reason I can think of in having the jockey wheel attached to van or trailer, and prevent hitch from contacting the ground, would be to prevent the hitch from being smashed or damaged to such an extent it would not be possible to re-hitch to the tow ball, in which case it would be Recovery and a new hitch.
------------- If everything runs smoothly then I must have done something wrong
If in Doubt Check it Out.

Afew months ago my van came off the hitch( my fault) and the jockey wheel, fully retracted stopped the hitch from hitting the ground saving me having to get a new hitch
