Having just recently bought my first tourer, I'm a caravanning virgin when it comes to somethings, so please be gentle with me....

I have a 7kg blue gas bottle that I need to replace before this weekend. I'm going away on a 3 day motorsport meeting in North Yorkshire, and so far I can't get an answer from the committee to see if it is possible to be sited near a lighting tower/generator, (I'm an official and they have a seperate area from the great unwashed.) so I can use the ehu, and power my fridge to keep the beers cold. (What else!!!)

So if I use the gas, what sort of usage will it take over the 3 days I'll be there, (There's cooking to do as well.) and at some time would I be as well to use the battery to run the fridge?

Not sure on the gas, how many you cooking for? run the fridge on gas if no leccy hook up.you cant run the fridge on your battery, you can only run it on 12v when hooked up to your car while your on the road, this is just to keep your fridge cool,so put your fridge on the mains for a few hr`s before you set off,

Thanks Bill.

Cooking will be for 3, (My mate, his son and me.) but I'm hoping that I can get an ehu to save the gas in the long term.

the fridge uses very little gas, depending on which model, the big ones only use max 300g/24hrs
cooking doesnt use as much as you would think.
A 6Kg propane for me does about 14 days of non ehu, some of those have used the heating on gas (febuary/march)
if we are away with electric, I still use the van to cook, and that will do a full years worth, about 4/5 weeks in total.

Right.

Just shook the bottle, and went to see my neighbour who also uses a 7kg bottle, and I reckon there is about a 1/3 left in each bottle.

So with the above requirements, should that last me the weekend?

Forgot to add, I'll also be using the water heater for washing up/showering.

I reckon if it's only for 3 days, you might get away with the remains of your first bottle, but take the other one just incase.

We always camp with EHU which we use to power the battery, the fridge, the heater and the water heater.

We only use the gas for cooking. (3 rings, a grill and an oven).

We are 2 adults.

We started last season with a full 4.5kg cylinder and we camped for 50 nights.
So far this year we have camped for 21 nights and we are still on that same fill of gas.

If there is 1/3 in each bottle then you will probally be OK.  That is assuming that you switch the water heater off when you don't need it and you don't need to use the heater very much. Off EHU the amount if gas you use depends on the season.  In the Winter we can go through a bottle in about 3 nights.  summer it lasts much longer.

I used to go away every other weekend through the summer months and would use just over 1 7 kg bottle through the summer.

The fridge uses hardly any gas at all. It shouldn't be possible to run it on 12 volts unless the car is connected and running. If you did run it from the leisure battery it would be flat very quickly indeed.

Only going on what you have left in the bottles i think you would be ok for the 3 days away. Why don't you get a few desposable bbq's and cook el fresco if the weather is right.Fingers crossed that you get the good weather for your weekend away!

A few bbq's have already been discussed, so has my infamous curry pot.

If any of you want to see motor racing on the loose at it's best, then the venue is Thornborough just north of Ripon. Come off just after the Quernhow cafe on the now old A1, down the newly built sliproad, and at the bottom turn left and follow the road for about 3-4 miles. You won't be able to miss it.

Start time on both days is circa 9am, and weather permitting, the BBMF will grace us with a Spitfire flypast on Saturday at 13:20 before going to Croft.

Adults are £10 per head to get in on each day, kids between 12-15 are £5 per day, and kids under 12 are free.

Yes but the 3 nights relates to no ehu, which is the circumstance that the OP was talking about.  So actually if you use an EHU saying that my gas lasts x months is not all relavent to the question because the amount of gas you use is so small.

I think you need to have another read of the OP. He will have EHU for the weekend and it will be in summer not winter, so saying a bottle only lasts you 3 nights is of no relevance, is it?

A season's use for us usually consists of

3 night winter break (EHU), 1 week easter (EHU), 3 night May Day (NO EHU), 4 night Whitsun (EHU), 14 night summer (EHU), August BH 3 night (NO EHU), 7 night Oct (EHU) and may be 2 or 3 weekendswithout EHU.  When off grid we cook, heat the van when needed, heat water and run the fridge on gas.  So a 4.5kg bottle can go a long way.

I think the OP would be best advised to go with the bottles he has but to make a note of the calor stockists in the area and pop out for a full bottle once the first is empty. That was there is no drama about how much is used and no worry about it lasting. Calor is readily available in most places, even I beleive Yorkshire
