We are going away 5 times this year in the caravan for mini breaks (21 nights in total) and I just don't feel like I'm making the most of the caravan.
We can't go anymore due to work and school commitments, so was wondering how many times you use yours per year?
I hate the idea of it just sat there and losing money, so what is everyone's thoughts?

For the past two years we also have not been away any more than 21 to 28 nights but that is just due to work etc like yourself.

It does make you appreciate the breaks more and make the most of them and hopefully things will change over the next year or two.

We are also restricted in time for longer breaks but have found a few sites near to home which allow us to arrive friday evening and stay till sunday afternoon. It's surprising how much of a break two nights can give you. We also make use of every school  holiday and are having a go at a Christmas trip this year.

For various reasons, we have only had about 10 nights away since we changed our caravan over a year ago. We used to be away at least every other weekend previously, it's just that something always seems to be cropping up this last year or so.

It really does not matter how many days you spend away what matters is that you can just get up and go when it suits you that's the best thing about owning your own van. We only got ours this year we have been away for a long weekend at skeg for the jubilee and have two weeks away at yarmouth booked. We are also looking to get a weekend away after the school holidays providing we can get rid of the kids lol 17

I think everyone's circumstances differ and as long as you get some use out of the caravan then what does it matter.  One year you may manage to get away more than the previous.  This year has been particularily bad weather wise, not too bad if there is just the two of you but can be harder if you have small children to amuse.  We are both retired and have still found it difficult to get away as much as we would like as sometimes day to day life just manages to get in the way.  I only retired last year and  now know what it meant when previously people who had already retired used to say to me 'I dont know how I found time to go to work'.  Just enjoy the times you do manage to use the caravan no matter how far you may wander with it.

We are new to Caravaning.

We bought our caravan at the begining of May.

So far have had 12 nights in it, a week in France, then 3 weekends away.

We are going away in a couple of weeks for a week.

Hopefully then the odd weekend up to the end of October, and then 4 nights at York.

So hoping to do this year, at least 30 nights.

Next year should be a bigger year though.

We plan to use it as much has we can(40+ nights), we are not wanting it sat on the drive 11 and a half months of the year.

Personally i dont see the point of owning  a caravan if your not going to use it.

I know peoples situations are different, work commitments etc etc.

We plan to use ours as much as possible.

Each year we tend to change our policy on caravanning but we normally do many short weekend trips away with club rallies or meets as it's easier to budget and manage to use the caravan more often. This year the OH decided she would rather go away for at least 10 nights with electric hook up so we did. We budgeted for fuel for the 400 mile return journey, the site fees and managed to save a little bit of spending money which we don't normally need. On our return journey our little dog became seriously ill and had to visit a vet in an emergency which we ended up having her put to sleep due to fluid on the lungs so we finally ended up with a huge vets bill too that we are still paying for. Now we're absolutely stone broke but because we are suffering the loss of our little dog the OH is complaining that she wants to go away soon as it's depressing staying at home. So basically we've done much less this year than we normally do so no more long trips for me anymore and I'll stick with my weekend policy from now on and hopefully we'll get out a bit more next year.

Tango55 sorry to to her about your dog. I think that exploiting CS sites within an 50-75 mile radius for weekends is my plan. With 2 (soon to be 3) small children we view the van as a cheap way of a family weekend away. Youd be surprised how much is within an hour/hour and a halfs drive away and for a weekend the onboard facilities are more than adequate. Even a weekend 20 miles away is a break from home and routine.

Just got our Lunar and waiting for our 6-8 weeks away then.

Had a Pennine Fc before and spent 10 weeks away only coming off at high season time.

It was too cold for us in the fc in wintertime so hoping to be spending a few weekends (but during the week) times in the winter.

We had to wait till we both retired to be able to do this though. If we could fo done it before we certainly would spend as much time in whatever unit we had as we love the life.

Go when you can, if you can and just enjoy it till you can go whenever you can.

Don't you mean exploring nearby CS sites not exploiting1717.

Your so right about the short distances though it does not have to be far to get away from it all. Better that 4 sq.walls.

We got away every month from March, except July and August.(wonder why).  This year we want to try winter caravanning depending on the severity of the weater.

We do have good winters in the UK . . ..

We havnt used ours much this year, FIL was poorly and other commitments came up wedding ect, so only done about 10 nights this year, just changed our van to one we feel will be more suitable for us to use all year round, so going to try to get away more from now up until near Christmas. Last year we used it loads, I just think as long as you can use it even a few times a year and get away for a rest then it doesn't matter if it's 5 or 20 times, unless you could do with the money thenit hats a different thing altogether, but it's nice to know its there when you need it.
