Hi folks,
I'm booking into trethem mill from next Saturday but can't arrive til 1pm. Don't want to site in an M5 car park with two young kids. Travelling from Nottingham so about 300 miles. Torn between going Friday and stopping overnight somewhere but then unless we leave early and park up somewhere in Cornwall for hours there does not seem much point or should I set off about 4am and try to get to Exeter before it gets busy. Wonder if anyone has done it on a Saturday recently or can none reccomend places to stop at?
Can't advise really, there are lots of service stations on the M5 though. If you calculate how long it's going to take to get there, add on half an hour for a wee break around the 150 miles mark, just start off at the right time for that. Half the time, if you turn up a bit early, they will still let you on - but you could always phone them and ask.
Saturdays are always busy on the motorways at this time of the year, so I would add on an extra hour for any delays or roadworks.

We went to Cornwall the other week and went Friday afternoon, stayed at Briarfield Motel & Caravan site overnight (3 mins off Junc 11 M5) £13 per night - plugged electric in, went over to Asda for tea. We then set off for Cornwall the following morning, and was able to enjoy a full afternoon after our arrival without feeling jiggered. Next time we do it, we'd walk over to Asda so we don't have to wait until 9am the following morning for our deposit back for the barrier key fob. Really lovely site with clean facilities.
Stayed at Tewkesbury Abbey / Cheddar Gorge/ Burham on Sea (all CC sites) whenever we have traveled down form the Wirral for a one night stop over ( Tewkesbury was the nicest ) . However last time we just had two hours kip on the M5 services due to desperation to get back down to Cornwall
I would travel overnight if you can, we are starting are second week just outside Newquay. There is major road works at Bristol . Could be big delays. We are not due to leave till next Saturday but are going to travel back Friday night. If you are determined to go Saturday as long as you can get through Bristol handy I think you should be ok. Hope it helps
In case it helps there is a massive Tesco extra about a mile behind the exeter services. Easy to find if you print a map off google. Fuel is 10p cheaper and 4 full english breakfasts costs £10!!! Plenty of parking to get the van in the overflow. Used it twice last year.
We live in Plymouth and know the M5 well. I would say that most Saturdays during school holidays, the M5 is slow or stopped between M5/M4 interchange and Exeter. Sometimes eastbound sometimes west, sometimes both. Last Saturday I took an EXTRA 2 hours to get from end of M4 (Bristol)along M5 to Exeter.
If it was me, I would travel Friday night. You could try Holman's Wood or Exeter racecourse for an overnight.
Regards
Simon

In fact, it's not even a mile, there is a new road system in place because of development in the area.
Come off the M5 at junction 30, and take the 3rd exit signposted Exeter, about 1/4 mile up the road, turn right at the traffic lights. Follow that road for about 200yds and turn left into tesco at the first roundabout.
We went a long time ago and decided to get as near as we could . We stayed on dartmore then this was the Ledford gorge caravan and camping site. . Nice spot and you are close enough to just take your time from there.
If it is possible I would look for somewhere as far down as you can.
because we couldn't leave earlier than 9 we went across to the Asda for a breakfast. If you arrive and not going out in car then you don't need the barrier fob so that way you can get away much earlier.
We found the motorway no problem - the traffic was actually more busy on the opposite side, people returning home.
We stayed at Pentewan Sands, between St Austell & Mevagissey.
We are going again next year and will definitely do the same overnight stay.

Thanks Simon really useful info. Are you of the opinion then that Friday afternoon will be any better? I kind of assumed it would be as bad. Obviously I would need to travel Friday afternoon if I am going to overnight down near Exeter.

Thanks Cazza, this is definately an option we are going to consider, even if we left at 8-9am hopefully we might get a better run on that last section of the M5 then we can find a nice service stop and rest before heading over to Trethem Mill for 1pm
Seems like most of you would go for an overnight on the Friday, but won't I just hit the same traffic on Friday afternoon and end up getting delayed getting to our overnight stop?
