being new to the caravaning scene this year we have taken every oppertunity to get away. Having done 2 weeks in yarmouth and 3 long weekends away i was all set to get my van packed away for winter or so i thought that was till the wife suggested that she was wanting to go away. Now i don't have a problem with it but going away in the middle of october was not what i had in mind. Well i caved in and said yes we will go away for her birthday ( fingers crossed without the kids lol) and was wondering do many people go away at this time of year? If so where is the best places to go?

Sounds very interesting! Are there lots of people going? We have been to Lurcher Farm Cottage a few times and love it there. Might see if they have any more space....

Our last outing of the year is usually a city break in the October half term, fingers crossed that we have abit of decent weather!

Ours never gets packed away - the longest gap we have is bonfire to new year, and new year to Feb half term.

This year we are also looking to use the van through the winter for the first time. We have had such a bad summer this year that we have decided not to pack it away between Oct and March so have booked to attend our first CC rally in November and then plan to do some last minute weekend breaks between Dec-March depending on the weather. We will probably stay local but unless its snow and Ice are determind to make more use of it this year! If we enjoy the November rally we hope to do a few more of these as well!

When we were still touring we went all year long it's brill in the winter all snuggly warm in the van and crisp frost outside

A friend of mine has mentioned that he will be away for christmas in his and that there will be at least two others taking their vans too which surprised me a bit. Would never dream of doing anything like that but it seems that a lot of people are using their vans all year round and not just during the holiday season. It has given me a bit more food for thought now and may look at doing a few more trips out before the end of the year.

When we first started caravanning back in 2005 we used to pack up and drain the water system around mid October and then return about March at the earliest but in 2009 and 2010 we went out to a New Years meet with one of the C&CC district associations but it was minus 4 the first time and minus 10 the second so we gave it a miss last year. Sods law it went really mild last year and regretted that we didn't book the event so it's on the agenda for this year now (still under discussion). What you have to remember is that summer caravanning is different to winter caravanning in the fact that every time you return home you have to unfortunately drain the water system just in case it freezes which can sometimes be costly regarding ice damage.

We are off Saturday for a week to Brighton, then two weeks later off again, and have more weekends planned from now until february.as Tango says its slightly different to summer caravanning , but if you are prepared for a cold snap, then it's great , we love it.

I love camping during the winter for the following reasons:

We go to sites we wouldnt touch with a barge pole between May and September i.e sites in lovely locations but during peak period bells and whistles and too busy

In the winter you know it'll be cold so you only need one sort of clothing (instead of what ifs), and can cut down on all the other gear, sunloungers, windbreaks, awnings etc etc

Beautiful night sky - there is NOTHING nicer sitting all wrapped up in blankets and fleeces drinking hot chocolate (with rum) gazing up at a clear starry sky

Dark mornings are the perfect excuse for a lie in. During the summer there is a need to get any sun available

Off again next Thursday for a fortnight. Only came back yesteday from a week away. Hope to use the van throughout the winter.

No point in watching the investment doing nothing on the drive!!!
