Well I have done a search and found absolutely nothing on the site so I have to go to the knowledgeable contributors.

Does anyone have experience of these vans? I have been looking a long time for a pop top that would go in the garage and possibly under French auto route 2 meter barriers at a price I can afford with facilities to keep SWMBO happy.

Found it, now I've bought it

Any advice welcome on problem areas that need sorting for a satisfactory ownership.

Not had a Rubis but we had a Rapido (the forerunner)

Would love one again if we could afford one.

Go for it. You have to be organised but they are easy to put up and very cosy.

We were on a farm site 10 years ago and the farmer knocked on the door to see if we were ok. He said it was minus 15 and his wife was worried about us.

When we lef home there was 4 inches of frozen snow on the roof. We couldn't shift it.

It took 5 days for it to melt so tat shows how good the insulation on the roof is.

Wow nedlog, that sounds fantastic

I think the Rapido, the Fleurette Tamaris, the Trigano Rubis and Silver are all extremely similar. They certainly look it. Others may correct me.

For interest what sort of heater were you using?

We just had a good fan heater.

We toured France but avoided the toll roads.

We now have an AVONDALE MAYFLY (bit more room but would go back any day)

Towed it with a Skoda Faverit estate.

We once went to the Lake District and when we got on the M62 near Manchester the snow  and wind was that bad we couldn't see the van behind us but it was rock steady

Nedlog, your posts are very reassuring, thanks

For interest we had an Avondale Bianco (with the porthole window) and although it was comfortable I did find it less than nimble to tow. We then as now towed with a VW Caravelle and that really is a great tow car with the added advantage of being able to stow loads of kit without putting the van over its limits.

I think the Rubis is a fairly light van with a low line Alko chassis that would be very easy to overload. Putting stuff like awning and heavy items in the car may just make the van ride a bit more comfortably.

Hi We've got a Trigano Silver, the later model which we've had for nearly 5 years now. Super vans.

Your van will go in the garage though length not height will be the problem.

Yes you do not pay for them on the French autoroute, though sometimes they will try and charge you. Stand your ground and you soon get sorted. I photocopied the specs page of the handbook, just in case, though never needed it.

Overloading. Not a problem, we can load our Trigano with 260kg. Check the specs of yours. Not many vans will allow that much. Our full awning sits in the side locker next to the wheel arch. The fibreglass poles are in the boot. I would however check the specs of the tyres fitted, ours came with very flimsy things, only just over the max weight rating.

They are very warm indeed in the winter, well insulated, and more important not too draughty. Ours has a warm air heater which is brilliant for the cold evenings and mornings in early and late summer, but in winter we use a small 500w oil radiator which we just leave on. Its never on more than half setting even on the coldest days.

Our van rode nose up, and as you cannot use drop bars these days, I fitted spacer bars on the A frame to raise the A frame up by about an inch. Its done 12,000 miles like this and tows beautifully.

One problem you might find is a caravan cover if you leave it outside. OH modifies a standard one, by cutting off some of the bottom, and sewing a new hem. We have just bought a new one, and used s slightly smaller cover, and used the spare material to fit a small wedge in at the front for the rounded bulge. Fits like a glove now.

Anything else, just ask.
Must get some new photos on here, don't use the porch awning any more.

Thanks for that freeatlast, plenty to think about there. I think ours rides a little nose up but not to bad (see pic).

Only issue I can see so far is the roof panel has sagged a little. I suspect this is more of a problem with the longer vans as the panels are only supported properly at each end.

Thought I would offer some feedback as I get to know my Trigano van.

I have been able to drop the tow ball on the VW so the Trigano rides level now and does seem to tow better.

The Silver caravan has an improved roof design where the folding sections are placed on top of the roof not in a channel. This has important ramifications in heavy rain where if the van is nose down too much, water can come in over the lip seal under the folding sections. For Silvers this will not be a problem.

I have fitted a PowrTouch motor mover as access to our garden is on a slope and therefore impossible for me park single handed. For those who wish to do the same a few words of warning. If Powrtouch supply the proper fittings and instructions (they didn't) you will have no problem fitting the unit to the front of the wheels. If however you get advice from 'experts' they will tell you to fit at the rear of the wheels to avoid shock absorber interference. I ended up fitting the mover behind the wheels after extensive communication with Powrtouch and the system appears to work well and have good clearance. Fitting in front of the wheels with the correct fittings would have saved me a day in pratting about, but hey ho that's life I guess. Almost forgot, unlike other vans with an Alko chassis, the ultra lightweight one fitted to the Tregano has a suspension design where the wheel moves forwards under compression and away from the mover when fitted to the rear. This has implications when the van is loaded and the roller has less grip.

According to the information section the unloaded weight is 750kgs and max loaded 950kgs so once again Freeatlast the Silver has an advantage there too.

Have slept a couple of nights in the can now having been given a Delonghi Dragon oil filled radiator. Even on a low heat setting the thermostat keeps the van at an even toasty temperature when frosty outside. This bodes very well for Very cold winter trips.

I hope to fit an Eberspacher heater in the front locker with a pipe through a underbed locker to the centre of the van for off grid heating. I will look at the issues of gas cylinder proximity before I start though, before anyone gets excited

Hi John
A couple of points.
1. If you have dropped the towball, are you sure this is legal? When I investigated this with the various towbar manufacturers I learned that very few towbars could have a drop plate fitted these days (basically only a couple of Land Rover models). If it is not legal and you have an accident or are stopped by VOSA... As I said above, it is better to put riser bars on the A frame of the van.
2. Our motor mover is a Powrtouch, and was fitted by them, it has special fixing plates.
3. We have a gas heater fitted, and it is fitted to the side locker in front of the wheel arch. Frankly would not bother again. We tend not to go on non-electric sites in winter. You cannot leave it on at night, it is too noisy.

Incidentally there is a new dealer up north now - in Bishop Auckland.

Pleased you like your van.

No problem with the tow bar freeatlast, there are two pairs of holes on the towbracket and I just moved the ball to the lower pair. Job done easily.

You are quite right about the Powrtouch plate. The type was specified on order but the plate supplied was not correct and also a specific connector bar should have been supplied. I got bad information from the manufacturer (emails are available) and no specific instructions, diagrams or photographs were forthcoming. I am not unhappy with the fitting as I have done it but the correct parts and information from Powrtouch would have made installation easy rather than a total pain.

You are also correct about blown air heaters. The radiator will suffice in 99% of situations but I do want a fall back option so it is likely I will try the Eberspacher. Having one spare does make it a more likely fitting

Thanks for your help

Hi John.
I sure like these type of vans, and the Trigano Silver is on my wish list, had a look at one at Casey's Chester and liked it, although within spec I am not sure that the VW Golf Hatch 1.6 TDi BlueMotion (firms car) I drive is the right car to tow a caravan, would rather be towing with something like a Passat Estate especially if trundling the 1000 miles down to the South of France.

As for France, why not go for a TAG at least then when using the 2m TAG lane Toll you will only ever be charged the car only rate.

Hi Francais, didn't expect to see you on the tin tent side

I didn't know about the TAG lane but I do now and can travel as a light vehicle without arguing the toss at the toll booth, thank you

The Silvers seem a top van and I think they are the same dna however it seems they do have an improved roof design. For me I saw the Rubis back in 2004 and wanted it then, however SWMBO forced me to get an Avondale Bianco with the porthole window and that was that. She got quite a shock just before Christmas when I came home and told her about my new addition

I've only ever used the Caravelle for towing so I cannot comment except to say that your motor will probably do twice the mpg that mine will

Hi John.
I was at the Manchester show today, and the Bailey chap, well Campbells caravans bloke said, my Golf would pull the Bailey Orion 430-4 no problem.

But I am not sure, even though the numbers add up, but only just, I still prefer to use a larger motor.

The Orion is a nice, if entry level van, and at £14k new seems good value, and I guess if a new buyer can say the van is going to be used as a static, the price would be down to £12k as no VAT would be due, although I am not sure that it is legal to buy that way.

I have been looking at Trigano Silver's, and even a 6 year old model is fetching close on £8k these days.

Anyway it's all work in progress, and it will be a few years yet before I end up buying a caravan, in the meantime the tent suits us fine.

As for the TAG we have been using one since 2009, it's a handy thing to have, if you do go for one don't use Sanef UK, best to buy via France APPR.

The Trigano, Rapido Club and Flourette Tamaris vans seem to make silly money these days. I've chased after the Rapidos a couple of times over the last 2 summers and they have just gone when advertised privately and that's at prices more than I paid for mine. I just love winter
It seems to be the Eriba effect, if we'd bought an Eriba in 2004 we'd get pretty much the purchase price now eight years later. That maybe a slight exaggeration but looked at from the long term, pop top caravans could make a very sensible buy.

For me the problem was camping in winter. Although I have the wood burner in the Eldorado, and ehu of course, the oh is reluctant to venture out with me as the nights draw in. This was not the case with the previous van as we had some good holidays throughout the winter. We sold as it was too big to drag around comfortably (maybe that's just me) and we had bought it originally to carry my mum and elderly aunt on holidays in France. When sold it had lost nearly half of its value. Hope to do a little better now.

Had my first run out over in Lincolnshire near Louth last weekend. Took a friend along as we were going to see the Motorcycle sand racing at Mablethorpe on Sunday. Was good to have a roomy double each for two 6ft plus lads. The van tows easily at the official speed limit and seemed to want to keep creeping up over that on the motorway. Far less problems with buffeting from lorries and the fuel gauge went down at a reasonable rate, a proper check on a longer journey. Frosty overnight with a penetrating north east wind but the 800 watt setting on the radiator was often interrupted by the thermostat so no problems on ehu.

It rides level now but I think the nose weight needs to be increased, the Eberspacher heater, fuel tank and a second gas bottle should easily remedy that. Will replace tyres next week for a set of 8 plies I think, this should give me a little peace of mind at the expense of slightly higher fuel consumption.

I replaced my old Rapido for a 2004 Rubis 420 a couple of years ago to give us a bit more space and it's great !!

We can now leave the double bed at the front end out all the time so no faffing around every morning and night.

Tow's good as well and I get about 40mpg from my BMW 318 estate. The only thing I'd change it for is Silver.

A few cautionary words though -

1) I had a leak in the toilet compartment when we first had it and investigations found that the bracket attaching the gas strut on the roof was loose and screws were letting rain water in. The brackets are only attached by 2 little screws, so I made new stainless steel brackets with 4 attachment points. -No problems since so it may be worth other owners checking this.

2) Mine has a hot water system and Reich mover fitted and with the awning and everything else we carried around it actually weighed over a tonne. We now carry the awning and as much apossible in the car.
