Hi. I went down to caravan today (sunday) just to empty dehumidifiers. Didnt notice anything until i got into caravan noticing all the cupboards were open. I then realised someone had been inside. I looked at door and it looks like a small screwdriver had been used to force door open. Going through everything they took tv (stupid me forgot to take out) and only the truma gas/electric heater cover. There was other stuff they cod have had like radio kettle etc. they looked like they tried to force wheel clamp off to. Maybe for alloys? They couldn get it out as its secure at front. But they came across fields and over a deep ditch.
I am moving caravan to a gold site now! (as current isnt really recongised) apparently this happened over a month ago. But owner said after 1st report she walked round them all and said only 6 had been done. Well i counted at least 11 others. 1 bloke that was there at same time said they only took dials off the cooker. I am feeling a bit crappy to be honest but guess it could have been worse. Got to call insurance tomorrow if its worth going through them i dont no?
I am a young caravaner (25) but i take things to heart and its my prode and joy. Any advice/help muchly greatful :)

Has the incident been reported to the Police?  You will need to do this to obtain a crime number as will be evidence of a claim of theft as the insurance will less likely to pay out unless you have a reference from the Police and storage site owner respectively.

Yes. I called local police from storage yard. They gave me a crime number :) Thanks :)

Just thinking into it a bit more. There was no screws on floor from the cover. Like they had all been taken out carefully. But also there is a connector for the electric dials i think that was not damaged. Like if someone was to rip it out they wouldnt have took so much care if you get what i mean. Makes me think maybe someone wants to do one up?

Call your caravan insurance claims department tomorrow and present your crime number to them. If you are claiming for a portable TV then you have to be covered for contents inside the caravan which not everyone takes cover for but if you are then don't be surprised if they request a purchase receipt of the TV. If you don't have the receipt then they will only pay out a minimum value that they consider that the TV is worth so you have to calculate then if it's finacially viable paying the excess fee for what you will receive in payment from them.

If this is a private unregistered site I suggest you check the detail of your insurance. Did they know it was there and were they happy to insure on an unregistered storage site?

I think we are at the same storage facility. Our caravan was a victim too. They couldn't force the lock so ripped open the window to gain access inside to unlock the door. They took out the entire Truma heater which left a big hole in the floor and an empty space! Also took all the cooker knobs, tried to rip out the freezer compartment of fridge (found the door from freezer compartment across the field where they had accessed the site from) and, like you, had left tv under storage box which they took as a bonus freebee. We have a crime number, have had assessors out who have approved repairs and insurance company already compensated tv cost (albeit reduced value to take account of wear & tear). As only one dealership deals with Hymers we have now had the okay from insurance to go ahead with repairs. Will be a long job I think. What we found interesting was that although there were plenty of finger prints left at the scene non were taken by police. They said it is not financially viable now to investigate this type of crime due to the latest cut backs.
We too are moving to a "Gold" storage site when the repairs are done as I don't think the insurance company would be happy if we returned to our current storage facility. May be see you there! Good luck.

Yep, that's the one! We have had so much bad luck with first a motorhome and now caravans that our family and friends think we are absolutely mad not throw in the towel and give up.
We are sorely tempted to after this last set back. A quick look through at holiday cottages that are dog friendly, to rent, made up our minds. We just love our caravan. it's our home from home. We will carry on and not let the b......s grind us down. That's as long as we can afford to!

Before you throw in the towel for good at least try moving your unit to a more secure compound first which is registered with CaSSOA. Your insurance will be reduced by around 10% and and the extra security should at least give you peace of mind.

Hi Martin 1987, the owner informed us on Saturday 1/12/2012 that there had been a break in, the previous night, to some of the caravans which included ours. She thought that about six 'vans had suffered. The police were on site when we arrived.
Yes, it is an absolute quagmire up there at the moment. We go up regularly to inspect the mouse traps we have set, just in case, as there is a gaping hole in the floor now. We have blocked it over as best we can. At least our truck looks like a truck now!

Hi tango 55, the storage facility we are going to is a CaSSEO gold registered facility. As I said before, we won't throw in the towel just yet. Our insurance is at the lowest available at the moment with all the security fittings etc. (not that that has helped this time!). As you say though, peace of mind is everything. Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi Martin, sorry to hear van broken into, all good advice, I presume you cant get on to a secure site just yet, may be worth adding a little extra security meantime, possibly something like these,

milenco-security-door-lock.jpg image by caravanhaullermilenco-caravan-security-locking-handrail.jpg image by caravanhauller

Milenco door locks from towsure, £50 and £60.

Hi Martin, don’t know your van, but your door lock should be a good few inches above your cooker worktop, shouldn't need a lot of room to fit the small lock, the handrail lock would need more room, possibly the removal of cooker to fit lock back plates, refit cooker, can only see one reason no room for lock, that is your cooker is a full size one and the worktop is roughly same height as door lock, and worktop would need to be eased from wall to fit lock back plate. I have the handrail type as I have a stable type door, have not fitted mine yet as I am going to make a full size back plate to strengthen the inside wall of van and make door frame more ridged and less susceptible to being sprung open, or back plate being pulled through the van wall. I may be wrong, but I do not know of a van that these locks will not fit,  anyway good luck with the insurance and a solution to your security concerns.
