End of this year we are at the end of the 3 year lease for our Skoda Yeti. 2.0 diesal 4 x4 . It means we could be able to lease another car. The Yeti has been a  great car..BUT.

I am getting closer to having to spend more time in my  wheelchair. Bob also finding it more difficult to keep lifting the wheelie into the back. So looking for a towing car that car take my wheelchair into the back without folding it. I do not have to sit inside in it at this time that is ahead of me another time.

Need the back seats to be able to come out to give more  packing space. Like the yeti does. If they come out with a van type or a mlti space type of car i would probably get one of them but they have not as yet. So looking at the Berlingo multi space. But have nor real info on it from a towing aspect. We have had not probs at all with the Yeti, so would like to be in  the same position and get a good one for us.

Anyone got one???

If you happy with the yeti, could you have a hoist fitted to lift the wheelie in.
if you haven't got the cash, try for a grant from motability.

Berlingo & similar sized cars are available with rear loading wheelchair access but as rear ends are modified for internal electric ramp I cannot see how a towbar could be fitted as well. If you can afford it & you & Bob can handle a larger vehicle you would need to be looking a suitable side access conversion & this would be on a base of(for example)VW T5 or Mercedes Vito vans/people carriers that could also have towbars.

A Berlingo in standard form is ok as a tow car though, I have one myself.

something like this? - although you will need a larger engine size to tow your van, but perhaps the way to go.

I've enquired about having a towbar fitted on a Berlingo type vehicle with the lowered floor and ramp and it is not possible.

If the Berlingo is heavy enough to tow your van I think that the 110bhp diesel would be quite a useful tow car.

Rob

PS We use a Galaxy with a wheelchair hoist in the back, it's more expensive to finance and run but it was the cheapest option with an automatic gearbox at the time.

We have two cars, both of which we can use for my mobility scooter.

The tow car is a Jeep Grand Cherokee, which is fitted with a crane type hoist.  That cost us about £1500, but is the easiest way to deal with it.

As a backup, my wife changed her car for a Berlingo Multispace, and she is delighted with it.  We did look at a conversion, but didn't like the back end being so low.  What we do have is a little clumsy, but works well.

We have two four foot ramps which we use end to end with a box in the middle.  We did try one four foot ramp, but the angle was a bit too steep for the scooter, and it grounded in the middle.  We got the ramps new on Ebay for about £55 each.

You do need 8 feet behind the van, and it takes a couple of minutes to set up, but we don't use it much. It's just a backup, as I can't afford to be without the scooter.

The back seats in the Multispace fold in moments, and the scooter fits in nicely with them folded.  If you need more room, they unclip and come out easily.  Of course, you then need somewhere to put them.

Just as an afterthought, with a wheelchair you may be able to manage with one ramp.  Otherwise there are lots of conversions for sale, and I'm sure you could get one through Motability.

Thank you all very much for all the information. It looks like the Berlingo is out as the low floor Bob does not like it as this will be carrying other things inside at the same time when touring it would possible ground on some of the higher sleeping policeman types.

Have been also told about the Citreon Grand picaso as this already takes a scooter and stuff needed in their caravan.

At this time I can still get onto a step to get into a vehicle if needs be, and sit up front. I also drive at times when allowed to17 but have the need to have a seat that is like the van type seating so my legs do not go straight forward but down onto the floor as though your sitting on an ordinary home seat. Then I do not cramp in the legs.

We had a VW campervan before this and it was good for me. But I do not know if they as an ordinary van would be allowed via the Mobility system we are on. Back door & side sliding door is an asset. Are there any like them around, does anyone know.

Many Thanks. taking all infor onboard. As we start looking March & April the changeover could be late Oct/beg Nov.

We like our Yeti but the back hatch means Bob has to fold the top of the wheelie down then lift the lot in the back. That is why it would be good to find a bigger inside back to take more and definitely a bigger space to get it through . So side sliding door and the base type vehicle that they use for campervans would be excellant. just not sure if Mobilty would allow it on lease scheme.

The electric chair is nearer onthe horizon than it was a couple of years ago. But not yet. I refuse to give up on my legs until it actually happens, I fight on.

High spec Volkwagen T5 or Merc Vito vans with windows & seats are regarded as large people carriers rather than vans & are the modern equivalent of the VW campervan you did have with similar lifting tailgates & sliding side doors. Very expensive though, the Hyundai i800 is similar vehicle but cheaper.

VW Transporter, Mercedes Vito and Renault Trafic are all available on Motability but the advance payments are pretty high compared with the Yeti.

Oh, if you are looking at the C4 Grand Picasso you will probably need the 2.0 as the 1.6 has low towing limits.

We have the Yeti 2.0 now and prefer this size any idea of the starter deposit via mobility we had to pay £1900 for this Yeti as it was our first one.

Hyundia never thought of these for towing Tentz.

VW would be a good one if we are allowed it. We do have the yeti to trade back price wise but will probably have to pay out again. If it is the VW it is likely we will try to keep it a lot longer than the usual 3 years though as I am also used to driving it. But the citreon Grand Picaso 2.0 could be worth looking it. The towing means a lot to us as we are away for 10 + 6 weeks a year hopefully.

The Advance Payments are listed on the Motability website but bear in mind that they will be changing at the beginning of April. The website also explains how the scheme works and how you may be able to extend the lease for a longer period.

Thank you have to see what it will be like later as our first 3 years are up beg. November

They take my mobility part completely so if it has to be more we need to know something in advance just in case. Although the mileage in this car is not quite 10.000.We have never ever made 5000 in any car we have had in all the years driving around. But then we had walking hols so never needed it much only to get us from a -b. So even with the holidays planned this year it will still be under 15.000 when we look to trade in.

Do you have the website address please

What about a vw caddy maxi 7seater.van type seating, easily removed for a wheelie. Got a good write up as a tow car.

With Motability leases you may have to pay an Advance Payment when you start a new 3 year agreement, the size of this payment depends on the particular vehicle. I believe you have to wait until the last 3 months of the agreement to order a new car. The prices are published quarterly on the website. All the details of how the scheme works and the current prices are on the website: motability.co.uk.

Steve's suggestion is a good solution but it is quite an expensive Advance Payment at the moment.

At the end of the day the car has to be right for you, Bob and the wheelchair. What may suit one person doesn't often suit anybody else so try and keep an open mind about the new vehicle and don't rush into anything because if you make a mistake you can't usually change the vehicle for another 3 years. Don't believe anything the salesman says, they often know very little about the cars they deal with, I had to tell the Ford chap that they could supply a Galaxy with an automatic gearbox!

Good luck with your search.

Rob
