Hi, we own our first twin chassis caravan, and have both Green flag and RAC break down cover, one is free through my bank account, and the other was free for a year when we purchased a car.

A good buddy of mine mentioned that standard travel cover doesn't cover you if you've got a twin chassis caravan due to it being too big with some cars etc.

Does anyone have experience with this, and if you have break down cover, who do you hit with and how much does it cost you please?

It was mentioned that the RAC still cover as long as you are a member of the Caravan and Camping Club, does anyone here cover their rig this way?

Thanks

Tony B

Never heard of this, we have a twin axle caravan, RAC Arrival for UK and ADAC for abroad. I think your friend is trying to wind you up, unless I am mistaken.

A caravan is not normally covered under any breakdown policy, although most should recover it if it is attached to the car at the time of breakdown. They do normally have length restrictions.

For £62 you can get Mayday cover through the Caravan Club and Green Flag which does not have these restrictions and will also cover you in case of a failure on the caravan which standard policies won't. The RAC do a similar policy through the Camping and Caravanning Club, but you have to be a member of the club to get the policy, although you can actually join through the RAC at a discount so I was told my a salesman in Tesco last week.

Having used the RAC in the past (not through a club) and Mayday (through CC) I would never recommend the RAC to anyone. In my experience, their "fitters" have been incompetent fools.

I used to work in a garage and never once had anyone of our customers who had used the RAC or the AA have their breakdown correctly diagnosed, the diagnoses were usually a long way off, with the AA diagnosing almost everything as a water pump.

But there are restriction with the standard Green Flag cover even though the same contractors are used.

Just whether these restrictions are enforced is hard to say conclusively though it would probably be unlikely.

Do the contractors get told whether they are recovering a Mayday member as opposed to a Green Flag member? Probably not and even if they are, the recovery company are unlikely to turn the job down on a technicality and not get paid.

Obviously their equipment can handle the vehicle or they couldn't be used for Mayday recovery.

It is my understanding that Green Flag will recover a twin axle caravan ( up to 8m) but Mayday offers two way recovery.(but costs more)

RAC will not recover a caravan over 7.5m, it is not axle dependant, hence I moved from them.

You can get a good deal on Green Flag with cashback see topcashback.co.uk up to £50 off. My £86 policy for 2 cars reduced to £36!!

It is my understanding that there is no longer any length restriction with RAC.

Hi, I've spoken to the RAC today who confirmed that with car break down cover they also cover the van and would attend a problem with either as long as the van is under 25 foot.

I'm sure the chap also mentioned a combined weight of 3.5 ton as well, so for those of you exceeding this combined weight it would be worth checking this out with your provider.

If over 25 foot you need additional cover starting at £82.00 and C&C membership. They have a deal at present when you get both with them you get a year free C&C membership for a year.

I haven't checked with all suppliers yet but it Seems to be vans above 25 foot in length where the issue is.

Our van is 25 foot 11 inches, so it's probably going to work out an an expensive 11 inches.

Autohome have quoted for general car recovery and a van of any size for just under £100.

Will contact Greenflag as I'm already a member and post the findings here.

Anne

you need to check your combined weight.

But as I said before the RAC will not recover the caravan if it cannot be repaired at the roadside.

Now I am confused (easily done), the T&C state that any length/width of caravan is covered, but then it says only caravans less than 7.5m long are covered. Ours is 7.99m (but weight is ok-I think). So what now, only just renewed,

I have read them and it appears to state (for RAC) that this applies to motorised vehicles, i.e. motor caravans. Am I right? they need a policy wording specialist (like me, I may be available for a suitable fee). Otherwise, why do they state elsewhere that there is no length restriction?

i have been a member of the RAC for over 20 years , and unless you belong to the CCC they have a length restriction of 25 feet for caravan and drawbar , as mine is 26 feet , they want me to pay £40 to join the CCC and as I have the full package from the RAC , my renewal is £140 plus the CCC membership of £40 , so I started looking into ADAC , I can get a better package from them for just over £80 which covers me for the whole of Europe , and guess what if I call for a breakdown in the UK they send either the RAC or AA out , so the RAC have shot themselves in the foot , I am getting better cover a £100 cheaper ,

If it is a relativly minor repair and does not need repatriation ADAC covers costs of up to 200 Euros to tow you to the nearest garage within 80 km (50 miles) radius of where you breakdown.

ADAC is a club and it's partners in the UK are the AA and the RAC.

All contact numbers in Europe have English speaking staff. These numbers are listed in the Members Manual or on Card.

Fuel. If filling the car up with fuel in Germany at a Shell Garage, show your ADAC Membership Card and you will receive a 2% Discount off Bill. Every little helps.

UP DATED JUNE 2012. If you should breakdown or have an accident with the car rendering it un-drivable, away from the caravan (ie on camp site. ) ADAC will provide you with a tow car to continue journey or for you to repatriate it back to the UK. On arrival at your home ADAC will sort out repatriation of the tow car to its Country of origin.

ANOTHER ISSUE. If you should breakdown on a French Motorway no Organization is allowed to tow you off except for the French Motorway Authorities. Unfortunately they demand fee for this service which can be quite a high price. The only way you can recoup your payment is to contact ADAC and they will re-in burse you. I would think this would apply to any other UK Breakdown Insurer but not sure
---------------------------------------------------------that's roughly what you are covered for with ADAC
