hI guys,

after recently having out first trip in our first caravan and having the fright of my life,

I am curious to see what people think about ATC.

On my trip to Scarborough coming up the A1 the van started snaking after overtaking a lorry. As my first proper outing I did the worst thing and that was to put foot on brake as my mind went blank.

eventually got the van under control.

I spoke with my local caravan dealer and they are quoting almost £600.

Is there anything else on the market that will do the same job?

I suppose £600 is a lot of money but not compared to safety of the family and caravan.

would welcome views

I'd look at you outfit match before spending that sort of money, and take extra care when overtaking.

outfit match not a problem (admittly only just)

Match at 88% obviously would have been better at 85% but advised not too much of a issue

 

yes will be taking more care, i guess in- expiriance perhaps, van was loaded correctly

Car curbweight 1648

caravan weight fully loaded 1457

added extra weight in car to cmpensate

I have had ATC on my last 3 vans, the first one retro fitted & the last 2 factory standard, & I wouldn't have a van without it.
We get a good discount from our insurers too, so you may be able to recoup some money as well as the added safety benefit.
Beware you need either a full 13 pin connection or a grey 7 pin socket as it uses secondary socket to power the system.

Move things around in the caravan and make a note of the result. Our previous caravan towed better with a light nose weight.

do you have a stabiliser fitted,if so what type,and is it in good condition,or try a towing course,very good

hmmmm snaking while or after overtaking a lorry ,can you give us a idea of the speed involved ,doesn't matter what safety features you have fitted once your over that 60mph line ,things start to go wrong ...???

Hi Guys

Alko stabiliser fitted 3004 (I think) brand new van

lorry had a bid sticker saying limited to 55 mph so was travelling just a bit over dont think over 60

we didnt take too much equipment and the van looked level so dont think issues with overloading in any particular place

 

Also have single 13 pin so no problems there Zafiral

In some cases lightly loaded vans, especially long single axle ones need a bit of weight, placed low down & forward of the axle of course, to be at their best. My 24' single axle is better laden compared to empty. Try and keep your nose weight just under the maximum of either the car or caravan which ever is lower.
ATC is a great idea, it slows the caravan without the car having to brake, just remember it is a safety device to assist in extreme circumstances, it is not a substitute for a poorly loaded or matched outfit.

If you do get ATC fitted then if you are in the same situation, then just ease off, if you jam on the car brakes, ATC will be of little benefit as the best way to reduce a snake is for the caravan to slow down more than the caravan. Don't follow Jeremy Clarkson's advice of accelerating out of a snake.
ATC works by applying the caravan brakes which should straighten the outfit out.
£600 sounds a reasonable price for retro fit.

There are many things you can do that won't cost you a penny. Check your tyre pressures on the car and caravan. Keep your speed down.

I am concerned about adding extra weight to the car to compensate. If you filled the boot up with this weight and you have high nose weight then you could have overloaded the rear axle.

You need to sort the stability out, not cover it up.

On my third ATC equipped van and wouldn't be without it ... still load and drive with care but it is worth its weight in gold for those emergency situations not of our making.

A much cheaper option for all you new to towing people is
quite simply SLOW DOWN its not a race the idea is to get there and back with everything intact

Not knocking ATC provided it's used in addition to common sense and safe loading. It's a concern when it is used as a replacement for common sense and safe loading. The symptoms the OP described suggest the latter may be the case.

No outfit should need additional equipment to make it stable.

I have ATC and think it is a good additional safety measure but from what you have said I would start by checking loading, ensure a good noseweight but not over limit, and the tyre pressures. If stabilizer is new should be ok, did you ensure that the tow ball was clear metal and had any paint removed?, if not pads in stabilizer will need cleaning.
