We are campers at present in a big tent with 5 of us 2 adults and 3 kids aged 4, 8, 10 .
I have a freelander 2 to tow with so no props there :).
I want to go to a caravan but how do you convince the wife? She keeps saying the tent is ok etc. but every time I go camping I keep seeing people with caravans and it looks so easy to set up etc and less hassle with all the kids and warmer lol.
Any advice would be great.
This is the caravan I have seen. Take a look

i had a similar prob, my wife wanted the van but i wanted to keep the folding camper-----after 7yrs with the van I can say we made the best move. You can camp longer through the seasons, we DA camp with the Camping and Caravanning Club and even do New Year with NO electric, it gives you more scope. See if you can borrow a friends for a weekend to see the difference. good luck, gary
We changed from folding camper with no regrets. Try taking her camping when you know the weather is going to be awful, that's what did it for us in the end. Packing up wet canvas in a gale.......
Ooh we moved from TT to caravan in October and love it. Soooooo easy, when you arrive on site you unhook, wind down, get some water, plug in electric and relax! Within minutes your holiday has started not hours like ours was. No watching weather or weekends away to make sure you aren't bringing back a wet to etc. we had toyed with a caravan a while, and went away for the weekend with friends in September, us in our TT them in their caravan and t just highlighted the sheer ease of caravanning in comparison. A few weeks later we had a caravan!
I would let your wife know how much longer the camping season will be with a caravan, so she can get many more holidays/weekend away. That would work.for me, love my holiday and my caravan.
What do the kids thin about it, can they help talk her round too?
Just remember you don't have to dry a caravan if it rains, more comfort sooooooooo much easier to pitch much more comfy , Oh and you don't have to keep you coats on.
Thanks for all the replies hope to keep this post going so I can show the wife :), kids are keen on it ! I think it's the 12k price that puts her off:( , I don't want to buy a cheap 2nd hand one of eBay etc heard some horror story's about damp etc. so want to stick to dealers .

We camped for a year with a big tent before the van and I personally didn't find caravan setup or packing up to be much quicker than the tent. However, being warmer and comfortable are the 2 most obvious advantages IMO.
Two ways to convince her:
1. Take her to a caravan show (say you're going to see the tents) - a bit of time in those palaces will convince anyone :-)
2. Try go away with a friend who has a van and sit in it one cold, wet evening and then trudge back to your tent - that's what did it for us :-)

I can understand the price thing though. We moved from tt to a Bailey Olympus 540-5 last year. We ummed and ahhed for years before that. I think the weather pushed us over the edge That and the time to set up. What made me hesitate was space. Our tt had a good amount of living space which I thought we would miss. However we are both so pleased we did take the plunge. we can have so many more trips including weekends which just wasn't practical with the tt. The caravan is so cosy and warm. We have an awning so plenty of space to play and as the children are getting older they go off on their bikes or to the play area.
Good luck, but as so many on here will tell you, you'll never regret it!
As another post said go the hair dryer/straightener route, also maybe tv route. Last resort it takes hardly any time to unpack once at home and less washing and ironing :)
Good luck hope she converts I know i love mine, so much easier to sit in and paint my nails hee heexxx
A comfy bed, and a warm start to the morning sold it to me! Love the van your looking at, if we'd have bought new that's what unwanted. We didn't as not so flush, but we have the same layout only with twin bunks and an older German van. We also tow with a freelander 2. We absolutely love it. The speed of setting up, putting clothes away before you go, food in the cupboards ready, crockery away all before you go. So you get to enjoy your break.... Works for me!
We had a large 8 man tent that before...... No comparison.
------------- Fab time in France again.... Roll on next year!
Also no walking across to the toilets late at night for last toilet stop and brushing teeth etc. all done in the comfort of your van. Hot and cold running water, better cooking facilities. We only moved across to caravanning in October and have had 3 weekends away so far, 2 of which we had minus temperatures (the latest being Easter weekend)and we were all snugly warm and no need to postpone trips. Also gives the flexibility to book ahead easier, with a tent/TT we always waited to see whether the weather would be suitable over Easter in terms of packing away a wet tent etc, now it's not a problem we can book ahead and we've been able to book for October half term too for a Halloween weekend away, we couldn't have done that in a tent!
Yes it's expensive, specially going down the new van route as we also did, but its worth every penny for the enjoyment it will bring to the family!
