We bought a kit with dish, cables, sat finder etc. Set up the tv and sky box but cannot get channels on tv. OH has spent 3 hours trying to get a signal. Finally got a 10 on the sat finder but still says "no signal found" on the tv. It is a zone 2 dish. Please help before OH goes bonkers!
Within a few degrees of sky there are a number of satellites. The sat finder meter you get with most kits will respond to any of them. Hence the 10 on the meter and 'no signal' message you were getting.
To align the dish using only a sat meter, compass and spirit level together with the signal strength display of the satellite receiver displayed on the tv is a very hit and miss method.
To put it in context the chap who comes out to install the dish on your house doesn't shin up and down the ladder peering through your front room window in an effort to see the tv to gauge the signal strength. Instead he uses a professional satellite meter.
These come pre-programmed with details of all the relevant satellites and you select on the meter which one you want. (For UK Freesat and Sky Channels that is Astra at 28.2 degrees East. There are actually several satellites at that location.) One you select the desired satellite on the meter you plug the dish into the meter ( the meter provides the power for the LNB - thats the device on the arm at the front of the dish which receives the signals ) and you can then use a compass, iphone app, internet site or whatever to point the dish in roughly the right direction and then making gradual movements will see the display on the meter show the signal strength of the satellite you are looking for.
These meters used to be very expensive but there is now one which is much more reasonably priced. It is not wholly self contained and you have to plug a lead from your satellite box into it as well as plugging the dish in. It will only respond to the satellite you select and gives an indication of signal quality as well as signal strength.
It should be borne in mind that the signal strength indication on satellite boxes is designed as an indication not as a means of lining up the dish as it responds to changes far too slowly. In other words by the time it responds to your movement of the dish - you'll have moved the dish further in an effort to get a response.
Satellite meter designed for the job is the way to go. Ok it cost just over 100 quid but then you have to decide whether you want to spend time setting up the dish or watching the tv. In england where satellite signals are relatively strong with a bit of practice you can find it using the compass / app / spirit level method but i'd prefer a quicker more reliable method.
Its very easy to get disappointed with satellite tv for caravans using one of the kits because people don't realise that there are skills needed to find the satellite and the guys who put the dish on your house actually get paid for doing it!
Hope that helps oh and the 100quid'ish meter is called a horizon nanosat.
i bought a portable satellite system, i took it straight back to the shop when we got home, lifes too short for messing about with them, stick to freeview
Our problem was the connecters on the cable we had not put them on correctly something to do with the fine wire that is on the coaxe. We google the problem then followed the info and it all worked. Vheck everything if in doubt google it.
One of the other built in functions the satellite meters of which I spoke in my earlier post has is a cable and lnb test facility which can be really helpful and tell you all is ok with the wiring and lnb before you spend time trying to align the dish.

Good Post. Ours went in the bin too. Nothing worth watching anyway!!!!!!!!
Hi I had the same problem too. Turned out the digibox needed the factory settings restored, then bingo. dishpointer.com is well worth looking at. OR
If you have satellite tv at home or there is a house close by with it, why not try it at home aligning the dish to where they are pointing.
I hope this helps.
may help
make sure your stand holding the dish is straight and level.set up tv and sky dish as per normal.find the signal page on the sky box.make sure the dish is vertical.make sure all connections are good and sound.if not you will be there all day.find dead south on your compass and point the dish there.next turn the dish really slowly in MM towards the east, when you get to 145 degs you should get a line on the screen which means you have a signal.you can if you wish find dead east on the compass and turn towards south until you get to 140/145 degs.it makes no difference.there are two lines on screen one for signal strength and one for quality.keep your mind on signal strength at first.if you can get 50% + signal strength you will have a good picture on on the most common channels.an easy way is point your your watch 12 oclock dead south and the satellite is at 5 to 12 oclock.dont give up first time it was 3 hours of messing about and it neally went through the window,i can do it in about 10 minutes now.
forgot to say once the signal is found turn dish to and fro a few mm at at time until the signal is strong.
to get signal quality you can tilt your dish a few mm forward or backwards.
best site google satelliteforcaravans.co.uk.

------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.

I dont have to worry about it now!! Some bugger stole my dish and tripod as i was walking my dogs at Lickhill Manor. So much for honour among campers.
did not last time, but normally put in a heavy duty peg and a rope lock to the dish.i know its of no use now but may help if you get another one.nothing is safe on site.i have also design a strong lock for the water pump which could make them go elsewhere when they see it.it locks onto the waterbarrel handle with another rope lock.
