We've had our 'van since spring last year. The previous openers had her for about a year. She's a 1992 lunar Venus.
I've suggested to the husband it might be time to change the tyres as we have a trip to IoW planned and after that we will be going to Wales. (We live in the greater Iondon/Kent area).
He says they don't need doing as no sign of perishing/splits.
I've suggested that we don't know how long they've been on for and as a caravan tyre doesn't do enough miles to show wear like a car tyre we should just do them anyway to be on the safe side?
We also subject our tyres to a bit if abuse getting it on and off our drive as we have to use short lengths of railway sleeper to drive the car and van over to prevent grounding out. This means the tyres get a lot more pushing and bumping than the average.
What do you think? Am I being over cautious? He's not a seasoned tower yet and I think if a blow out happened it could be really dangerous.
We also have a 92 Venus, great layout. The kids love the L shape layout at the back with their own TV and xbox, they often close the door to lock us out.

if you look on the sidewall of the tyre there will be a date showing week and year of production of tyre, but I would suggest new ones anyway just because you still don't know the life of them before you had the van
I got to get new ones for mine too, 165 r 14 C I think they are, make sure they are the right one for the weight of the van or you will end up with a blow out.
He is giving the the van a big wash today so will check the tyre dates and if as I suspect they are quite old I shall just book it to be done and tell him to suck it up ;) what is price the safety of your family? I'd hate to have an accident with my kids on board especially if it was due something I'd considered and been talked out of sorting out. If we damaged the van we wouldn't be able to afford to replace it. I don't even know if they insure vans this old?
Any recommendations on companies to fit new ones if I go ahead?

P.s lunarvenus, the end layout was one of the things we really liked too. My only critism is the pull down bunk is very narrow and flimsy.
We don't use the bunk, as you said they are not very good so I woukdnt any way.
I was thinking of removing the bunk completely, I think it would make it look a lot bigger down the end without it.
if there are no visible cracks they should be fine ,check the date on sidewall usually ,BUT most importantly make sure the pressures in the tyres are correct ,there was a thread on here in the repairs section a couple of weeks ago that gave a chart re-weights and tyres to work out the correct pressure

175r13c is what was fitted to the spare when we got it renewed. I can't seem to find the date stamp on the exiating tyres though despite doing google images to get an idea what I am looking for.
If you go to a couple of tyre companies they'll quote you to replace your tyres & should be able to get stock in overnight if they don't carry them. I buy all my lorry/car/caravan tyres from one place and he can even get a tyre in the same day if I call him early enough so availability shouldn't be a problem.
Several have told me I've always thrown good money away on TYron Bands & wasted tyres changing them too early but I've always had Tyron Bands in & replaced the road tyres every fourth season. I've never bothered changing the spares because it was a steel rim to replace an alloy one in the event of a puncture or whatever and it would be going back under the van as soon as possible.
I'm posibly wrong but the way I look at it is simple, any tyre new or old can get punctured or blow out but when tyres have supported the weight of the van for long periods of being parked standing still, all the weight on one place doesn't do the structure of the tyre any good & it's no good wishing you'd changed the tyres after they've gone bang and caused damage. So, for the sake of two new tyres every fourth year that's what I've always done.
sorry to be a downer,on tyres there are some points by which a caravaner is guided.they should be changed every five years whatever.unlike car. you do not know the history of the tyres before you got the caravan you do not know how much possible abuse they have had,ie.left with low pressure in storage.flat spots on the base then blown up.cracks on the tread and sides due to uv light.there could cuts on the inside of the tyre.there is two things between the road and your caravan and that is the tyres.a blowout will spoil your hoilday.dont forget to get them balanced if you buy some.all
the best.do what i did if the caravan is home,i called out a tyre fitter firm, they fitted and balanced them at the door.they will take card payment at the door.it was so easy and worry free.any 8 ply tyre of your required size will do for the weight of your caravan.
look at ..........

------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
I have just been reading the june caravan buyer and they have a big article on tyres this month the main things to concern us is that the tyres degrade over time due to exposure to the weather and sitting in one spot for long periods of time. Apparently even some of the main car manufacturers are now recommending that the tyres are changed after 6 years regardless
