While I appreciate that wheel detachment is a thankfully rare occurrence & the chances of it happening twice to one person is therefore even rarer, but once bitten & thankfully no one was hurt.

Would you recommend upgraded bolts (160nm) or going to steel wheels.
The repair agent says that in 25 repairs for detachments over 8 years they can't remember any being steel wheels.

Check torque before every trip if alloys. Better than buying wheels but still a nuisance.

The wheels were checked before the journey.

I am erring towards fitting steel wheels, but annoyingly I will then loose my 10% insurance discount for the Axle lock.

If this is a common occurrence, should the manufacturers not be made to rectify the problem?
There must be a design flaw with the hub / wheel / bolt combination. Is it just Al-Ko or are other chassis having the same issues?
We drive cars with alloy wheels for many tens of thousands of miles without ever having to re-torque our wheel nuts every trip. So why should we have to re-torque our caravan wheel nuts every trip, which is probably a couple of hundred miles on average.

I fail to see the point of alloys on caravans. Steel wheels will be about £40 each, a tyre place will change your tyres over for a tenner a wheel & you can flog the alloys on ebay so win win.

The only advantage of alloys to me is that they can accept the Alko axle lock & gain an insurance discount.

Mine came with them, fancy - a 1982 caravan with alloy wheels! I think it looks daft, so I shall be doing just what you say as soon as I need to change them anyway.

It is true all vans can lose wheels. It is usually down to incorrect torque or over tightened bolts. Once over tightened the threads stretch.
I was checking on the make as of Sept 2011 bailey wheel bolts changed and require a torque of 160 nm.

Those were the new bolts I was going to fit if I stick with alloy wheels. Thanks for the advice.

On Bailey's parts website they list both the 160 nm & the standard bolts as suitable for my van. When I spoke to Bailey the guy suggested for different bolts I should also fit new wheels & hubs!!! A little excessive I thought!!

My question is would steel wheels be a better bet?

It's not just a caravan issue, car manufacturers also recommend checking your wheel nuts every 6000 miles when alloys are fitted.

Alloys on cars do have a tendency to slacken off after they have been disturbed, I am sure caravans are no better or worse.

The bolts are Delta protekt Vh301gz and are grey as apposed to the shiny cadmium plated bolts you already have
