We are off to North Devon this Saturday, the caravan park we going to, give directions on their website from the M5 motorway to their caravan park, they basically say do not use satnav as it could send you down very narrow lanes. This got me thinking about my satnav a few occasions it as sent us down narrow roads as if taking short cut off the main roads. l am of the old school and still carry a road atlas and ordinance survey map and use a route planner printout and if need be Google earth when planning a route.l only use satnav for motorways and city/towns.

So do you trust your satnav?

I think you are very wise to use all available sources and not to put your complete faith in any one source.

We do the same.

In a word NO ! I went out one weekend (without the van) looking for some CL sites we may like to stay at. I used my sat nav and found myself going up roads that were difficult enough just in the car. If we've had the van behind we'd been in trouble. So, the moral is check your map and use sat nav cautiously.

What camp site is it as we have been to one that if you go in the wrong way you will not fit through the lanes.
luckily we went out somewhere from the site and ended up in the lanes ( without caravan ) I just fitted through with a transit van.
Check on google earth maybe before you leave get an idea of the place..
If its where we went its really easy to find from the m5.

No not really, it is good for cities - towns, but rural areas a bit iffy, check the map.

I trust my state of the art, top quality sat nav, never got me lost or taken me on a wrong road in the UK/EU or when I have used hire cars in Latvia.
The make, the wife and a good road map

Definitely not since our trip from Cornwall to Minehead always better to trust the site instructions as it is certain that there is an argument and the sat nav gets thrown into the glove compartment [IMG]

We have just bought a road map book which lorry drivers use, steep inclines are shown - I just need to learn how to use it as once the arguments start, its just too big to throw it in the compartment with the sat nav

Asking "do you trust your satnav, not to send you the wrong way?" is the same as asking "do you trust your hammer not to hit your thumb?".

Any equipment is only as good as its operator. I mis-typed the post code of my destination and ended up a farm track with nowhere to turn round and the caravan on the back. I ended up trashing my motor mover

Yes we do trust our satnav. It is usually quite good but if it looks as if we are going down a narrow road we ignore it and it soon re-routes. Ours is a Navigon Truck and Caravan one.
We always follow the instructions given by the site though when nearing the destination.

We went to minehead too from north Devon and we ended up going over the moores and tight lanes on the way back, stick to motorway next time.
I'm sure most satnavs have a option to stick to main roads.

NO i do not, traveling to the large indoor market in St Austel in Cornwall my sons girlfriend suggested that we follow her sat-nav.
to cut a long story short the lane got so narrow we had to open the car windows to break off overhead branches and bracken to get through. to narrow to open the doors.
reversing was out of the question,no turning points and to far down the lane (miles) to reverse.
took about 35mins to travel 4 miles.
Short cut my Ar-e.
I would never use one with a caravan.
follow a sat nav to Nepps farm caravan park near Blackpool and you will also be in for a shock.
If the directions say dont use sat-nav DONT USE IT.

l can give one instance why l don't trust satnav, about 5 years ago we decided to have a long weekend at a caravan park in Llanrwst North Wales about 50 miles from home simple route A55 junction 19 onto A470 to Betsy-y-coed after couple of miles on the A470 satnav told me to turn left ok l thought follow satnav instructions, well lets just say luckily enough l was towing van with 4x4 the road actually a track with grass growing in the middle and the steepest incline l've seen in a long time, switched to four-wheel drive and manage to get to the top. The wife was crying panicking and blaming me for taking route. this went on for about 8 miles luckily enough no-one was coming the other way. l punched into satnav postcode and main routes, if anyone finds a satnav on the road you can keep it.

I use my satnav every day near enough to find streets in my local area which I know well and it oftens trys to tell me to go the long way round , I just carry on going my way and it redirects straight away so I just don't get it sometimes.
