Hi

When a caravan starts "snaking" some say to speed up and some say slow down, which one is correct?

The ones that say speed up will probably be the ones you see later on wrapped around the central reservation barriers on the motorway. If unit correctly loaded and matched with tow vehicle a snake should only happen if driven without regard for the road conditions. Unfortunately the proponents of speeding up are often the ones with overloaded units as well.

I read something a while back about the power needed to pull out of a snake and that was outside the possibilities of most towing vehicles.

Just remember that you won't get a snake at low speeds so why speed up if you get one.

Speeding up "can" help but at the same time adds to the energy available to wreak havoc should that "can" turn not to fall in your favour.

Best by far to ease off power and resist anything but a feather touch on the brakes.

Buying/specifying an active system like Al-Ko's ATC before the event is the thinking person's choice.

A caravan on a correctly specced & loaded outfit will not snake. To ask whether you 'speed up or slow down' if a snake develops suggests you will have a choice which in heavy traffic in a possible accident situation you will not have.

An outfit that snakes on a straight clear empty road is incorrectly specced/set up &/or loaded & obviously this can be avoided in the first place by taking the good advice offered in this forum.

I've had one, and yes was incorrectly loaded. I took foot off gas and tapped brake lightly till it came back under control. Limped slowly to nearest services and repositioned loads. No problem after, or ever since.

My "3 caravans ago" unit was written off in a Snaking Accident.

It was fitted with a brand new Leaf type stabilizer which I presumed had been set up at the factory. Being new to this type of stabilizer I did not have the knowledge of how to test it.

The accident happened on a straight road on a downhill stretch when I was doing about 50mph.
I was overtaken by a large van which started the snaking.

I do not remember the sequence there after until I came to rest, slammed against some 15 foot high small trees. The caravan was badly dented and I later found out that the chassis was twisted, but both the car and myself were okay.

After I had towed the unit back to my workshop I was horrified to find that in the lock-down towing position I could move the Leaf with my Pinky. There was no friction on it what-so-ever.

Now my Leaf Stabilizers are checked as a matter of course during the annual service and before any trip away.

Pain, preferably other people's, brings knowledge!

Most definitely not a true statement; towed units are inherently unstable and if provoked by the likes of an "elk test", say to avoid an idiot or a railway sleeper left in the roadway, then even the most impeccable mannered towed units will snake. Believe me but don't try it!

I think the "logic" behind some saying speed up is to put the car and caravan under tension again thereby in theory regaining control.
Problem is few cars will have enough instant power to accelerate quick enough. Mine is a v powerful car towing at around 75% but not sure I would fancy trying to do it either, yet alone with the 95% of cars/caravans that will have a lower power to weight ratio

Never had one and don't want one but I am careful going down long hills and scrub speed off at top and then can keep the unit speed down on the descent.

Loading, tyre pressures on car and caravan, keeping eye on speed, large vehicles about to overtake etc are all equally important as well

What is the proper thing to do when large vehicles are about to overtake?

Be aware firstly and then if you can move to the left hand side of your lane if possible (keeping within your lane of course) to maximise the space between the two high sided vehicles which should help reduce the "pull and push" effect you get and often feel.

Its often more of an issue if there is a big speed difference between the two vehicles i.e a high sided Transit zooming by at 80 rather than an artic going by at 2mph more than you

Regarding a caravan snaking the most possible time this will happen is when travelling down hill because the caravan then starts to push the car and that's where the 85% recommendation comes into effect more than any other time. To understand the situation a bit clearer, if you are walking up hill pulling a heavy trolley behind it will hold back thus needing more force to pull it up the hill but when going down you naturally get behind it to hold it back otherwise if you stay in front it can easily get out of control and difficult to stop. The same situation applies with a trailer but as it can't be held back from behind the importance is to keep the speed down and have the caravan correctly loaded. So in relation to the question, if you are going down hill and the caravan starts to snake is it best to speed up and get further out of control or slow down? The answer is to slow down but not to apply the brakes if possible because once the pendulum effect takes hold then a sudden jerk will most likely kick the caravan 'A' frame to one side thus taking the towball and the the back end of the towcar with it. This is why the 85% match is relatively important for novices as it can take a few years of towing experience to handle an outfit over the recommended guideline.

A few years ago we had a very bad snake on the M5 just south of Gloucester. It started after we overtook a HGV. Initially I took my foot off the accelerator and did not brake.
When the combination had slowed down a bit I gently accelerated and this pulled the unit right. The car was a S80 Volvo so heavy and powerful enough to righten the outfit.

follow the old but good advice "not to go faster downhill than you can go up it". Simplistic and not wholly technically sound I know but covers most of the avoidable risk situations.
