We were staying at Stamford CC site last week and need to change our Propane Light cylinder. The warden told us there had been problems with his supplier who said the full/empty guages had been leaking, and he couldn't supply them. Is this a nationwide problem?

Hi Allan, We've used them for a long while too, no problems. But it seems the guage valves are playing up and leaking.

I can't see anything about this on Calor website and I would have thought they are have a duty of care to inform users if there is a problem or else leaving themselves wide open to litigation. I think I might have s subtle word with them at the NEC in a few weeks time.

if were the case, surely there would have been a recall.
In stock at my local Go, which is good, because I need one :)

It's amazing though what excuses companies come up with regarding a lack of deliveries when they have probably made a stock error themselves and quite often put the blame on innocent parties which in this case is Calor. If there is nothing on their website regarding this safety issue then either take with a pinch of salt or contact their customer services and actually speak to someone with your concerns. I used to buy the 6kg. steel cylinders (before I changed to calor-Lite) from a local Morrisons fuel station and at one stage they had no 6kg. cylinders in stock so in desperation I said I would take a 3.9kg. cylinder because they could not provide me with the cylinder required. However, I was refused saying that I can't exchange for a different size cylinder but I persistently argued that you can providing you are not exchanging propane for butane. I had to go elsewhere to buy a 6kg. cylinder but when I returned home I contacted Calor customer services and I happened to be in the right. However, Morrisons forecourt manager had a call from Calor in response to this matter and so I visited Morrisons a few days later for an apology. I didn't actually receive an apology but they made an excuse regarding an employee not ordering enough quantity but my final reply was that I wouldn't buy from them again due to their lack of their professional knowledge and customer assistance. As the saying goes....the customer is always right but they hate it when you do prove them wrong.

I heard of one dealer telling customers that there was a shortage of lite bottles due to people stealing them from scrap. If there was any truth in the matter the people must have been idiots as the heavier bottles would have more scrap value. Not saying what I thought of the caravan dealer who was trying to divert the blame.

erm, unless its changed since then, you cannot swap a 6kg for other sizes, but you CAN swap between types, propane to lite to butane, but they MUST be of that size,
All other sizes are swappable between the other sizes and gasses.
This is from the CALOR website
![](https://www.calor.co.uk/images/2781/original/Cylinder_Exchange.jpg)
you can swap within a group, but not accross a group, although saying that, I used to swap 13kgs for 6s regularly, both ways.

If you tip the cylinder upside down, give it a little shake then tip it back up you find that the guage should work again as they just sometimes get stuck. That was a tip I picked up on this forum and it worked for me although I have only ever had just the one cylinder where this has happened, every one since then I've never had a problem with.
