Well it's happened again. In the summer my son paid less to go into an apartment in Devon than I paid to take my own caravan, I have just booked a static for £99.00 for three nights would have cost me £109.00 to take my own. Waiting with interest to see what the static will be like - I almost hope it is awful!

3 nights for £99 at this time of year?

We only paid £14.50 more for a week in Cornwall during the summer holiday.

This time of year should be very cheap.

Last 2 statics we rented were uncomfortable and a bit tired. Prefer staying in our own 'van even if it doesn't always make the most financial sense every time.

Cor blimey, why don't you join both clubs (£80 odd per year), and stay at some of the better appointed CLs/CSs? They won't cost much more than £15 per night for all of you. There are also some reasonably priced commercial sites.

Its cheaper to hire statics than buy a caravan in the first place, add to that maintenance & extra fuel costs towing, you could have years in a static, chuck in a few wks in Benidorm as well & still spend less than owning a caravan...But I thought the idea was to go caravanning?

I would say only "saving" we see is going to France in peak periods. We couldn't go to site near beaches with pools etc for same price in a static.

For us it is a lifestyle choice where we can be together more at weekends throughout year, not a money saver

One of the reasons we returned to caravan ownership was due to the shoddy standards of some suposedly Luxury statics. We came across everything from cheap back breaking mattresses, to the remains of someones takeaway stuffed into a draw in the bedroom. Even when we paid extra for that years model, there were instances of previous occupants leaving the place trashed and stained on carpets and uphostry.

Yes, there were a handful of privately owned caravans only let to friends and family by word of mouth, that were fairly decent, but even these were never as comfortable as owning your own caravan with your own personal choice of bedding and furnishings, kitchen equipment and comfy bed ect.

I agree regards the high prices of some sites though, and for various reasons l very much doubt that l will be using any of the CCs main sites for next season, not just due to their high prices, but also due to meeting a couple of 'Jobsworth' wardens this year, being ticked off for booking a with awning pitch when we booked early in the season, only to change our caravan the week before departure and not have time to sort one out for the new van, so be awningless on arival, then the warden who refused to let us book in and insisted we did a tight turnaround at reception and leave the site for being a whole ten mins early!
For next season we plan to be away for longer, but maybe only out about 4or 5 times, and one will be to a small comercial site, 3 will be to CLs that we know and love, and the other will possibly be to an event which is managed by a racecourse.

We plan to stay caravanning as long as our health and circumstances will allow.

Julia

After watching some of the hotel's from hell shows on TV with bed bugs etc i am glad we have our own caravan.

Thats a mental price, If it was a busy action packed Haven site or similar then i wouold expect similar prices. They seem to charge a lot more for 3 nights (weekend) than 4 nights weekday's.

Taking advantage of people wanting a weekend away.

Are the CC sites not around £20 per night per pitch?

We stayed in a static once - with a couple of friends - the beds were uncomfortable but it was a lot cheaper than taking our own vans.  After a week away with them we were almost not friends - We hugged and made up though. Best to be on your own at night and join others in their awnings.
