I am just considering using the van over the next month or so, but whilst I was away recently I was invited to go on a site on New Years Eve, which does seem a lovely idea but I have family at home and at that time of year I prefer to stay at home, but I wonder if being away over the winter is a waste of money, because I have other family at home so I wouldnt be saving on the bills and if the weather is bad is there limited things to do?. I do like the idea using the van over winter but wonder how others feel about the experience.

Winter caravanning is lovely, seaside places empty, you've got the beaches to yourself. Sites empty, pick of where you want to set up, no sawn off little runts running about screaming or playing football, (er, sorry meant to write little treasures, just a Freudian slip), lol.
Just depends what type of person you are and what you look for out of your 'vanning.
Me, hoping we get of 5 or 6 times over the winter, long weekends

On a site in Perthshire in November.
Water Butts frozen solid.
We are sitting outside in T shirts and shorts, eating lunch in the warm sunshine, while 75 miles NE, Aberdeen is shut for 4 days because of deep snow!
Aah, the joys of winter camping.

Love it!! We leave the leccy heating on very low over night. It's so cosy!

We always used to go away for Xmas and generally avoid family squabbles which always seem to between other family members and not our own.

We have been away for new year on a couple of occassions over the last few years but only on a rally without electric hook up which can be quite expensive regarding the gas consumption during the severe cold weather so connecting up to an electric hook supply is obviously the favoured option. However, there are items that you need to purchase for winter caravanning such a water barrel insulation jacket, fridge vents covers that clip on to the existing ones to stop the fridge over cooling and most important of all that you have propane gas cylinders on board and not butane as propane will function at temperatures well below freezing point whereas butane will only function effectively at +3 degrees celcius or higher. We used to spend Christmas day with parents but as they have all now passed on with the last one in February this year then the festive season in the caravan could possibly be the future for us although we haven't made any plans for this year as yet.
