I purchased a used caravan from a dealer on late August this year. Have just received a letter from CRiS acknowledging that I am the new owner. If I want to register it with CRiS it will cost me ££. Is this correct?
I noted on the cris website they quoted that if travelling abroad you can get into trouble by not having your cris docs with you.....so will a dealership invoice suffice as cris is not a govt body just a private company so it's documentation is not "official"
There are also two prices quoted...£15 for registration and £12 for change of ownership.. How do i pay for change of ownership online ?
I keep a photocopy of my CRIS doc and the caravan insurance docs with the car docs when I travel abroad. The CRIS doc is clearly marked as a copy in case it should get lost and fall into the wrong hands!

Travelling abroad with your caravan can be a great experience; however most European countries outside the UK operate a mandatory registration scheme. This means you should carry your caravan registration document with you at all times to prove that you are the registered keeper and are therefore entitled to use the caravan. Failure to provide this documentation could lead to your caravan being impounded, as well as a hefty fine.
From the CRIS website I think this is absolute rubbish!
I am quite happy to be corrected if anyone can point me to the law verifies it.
I bought my van in France but declined to register it there, and it isn't CRIS registered along with a large number of owners of S/H vans who can see no real benefit in CRIS.

It's fairly unusual these days for dealers to pay for the registration of a pre-owned caravan, even though some of them will take the money to say that they will register it.
As for the charge, the DVLA is publicly funded so you effectively pay for it via your taxes, cris isn't so have to charge to pay the bills. The price went up a couple of months ago from £12 to £15.
Of course cris isn't a legal requirement and registration is voluntary so it's up to you. Check with your insurers to make sure they don't require registration before they will pay out on any claim.

Same here, put all the little invisible dots so that when the police use their gadget that shows up things the caravan lights up like a starry night. Plus the indelible post code pen is invaluable to write on things you do not want others the steal & be able to keep as it does not come off.
Kids stuff for school to keep it theirs would benefit from this pen writer.
Sorry maybe it's me being stupid but if you have received a letter from Cris aknowlodging that you are the new owner then hasn't dealer already registered it on your behalf.
When we bought our new van we got a document from the dealer with the Cris number on it and told we would have to contact them to register it in our name as they had already informed Cris that they had bought the van to sell on
