Disappointed, if you use your caravan on the public roads it should be tested for safety against causing harm to others and not just left to an individuals choice to have it tested when serviced, even then a road test is not included of required
be honest how many caravan owners don't have their vans serviced every year.
just recently saw some plonker towing a twin axle on the M5 with 2 wheels missing
Been around long enough to have seen and heard of many horror stories of accidents caused by unserviced sheds
Merry Christmas to all.

EU regs are implemented differently in different countries. Other EU countries only require cars Mot'ed every 2yrs & their caravans would be the same so no real problem. In Germany caravanners just get a service & mot every 2yrs. Caravans are ok to be serviced every 2yrs, an annual service is unnecessary.
Here in ripoff Britain we pointlessly service our caravans every yr & if Mot's were introduced here, they would be every yr as well.
So any EU law requiring Mot's to caravans would be far more troublesome & costly to UK caravanners than in other European countries with more sensible regimes.

How does one know with absolute certainty that the test would be every year.

There was a move to get UK cars Mot'ed every 2yrs after car is 4yrs old same as other European countries & it was rejected so there is no reason to suppose carvan mot's if introduced would be any different. You could not really have caravan Mot'ees without DVLA registration of caravans either.

Simplest way to do it is to be issued with a slip for an MOT.If not produced when towing the van gets crushed..

I for one am not unhappy that the proposal has been abandoned.
I may be going against the flow here, but am heartily sick of beaurocracy sticking it's nose into our lives and it's hand into our pockets.
If you are unable to maintain your own van in a safe condition, please feel free to afford to have it serviced by 'professionals' every year, just dont inflict that expense on me by default.
Merry Xmas one and all, rant over.

The law as it stands in the UK is your vehicle and any associated trailer must be fit for road use to be used on the road. An MOT certificate proves it was roadworthy at the time of the test and nothing more. A car or commercial vehicle with a MOT can still be unroadworthy and commercials are stopped and checked by the police / ministry of transport quite regularly. Any vehicle that fails the inspection can be refused use of the road until it is repaired (a GV9 in the old days - may still be the same). Trailers and caravans are ruled by the same law. So although there is no trailer mot, if you are stopped and your van is not up to scratch you can expect a fine, points on your licence and to be refused permission to continue your journey until problems are fixed. This in my mind makes caravan mots unnecessary. I wonder how many caravan accidents are caused by poor maintenance (mot can police this), how many are caused by bad outfit matching (no mot can police this) or bad loading or overloading (no mot can police this). Maybe education can rule over regulation!!
------------- Why am i doing this instead of camping??!!

For Mot's to be enforceable then caravans would need to be registered with the Dvla with their own numberplate as with other European countries, this would of course make caravans less attractive to steal as it would be more difficult for thieves to sell them on. The downside is that it would costs £millions to set up & caravanner's costs would probably rise.
I would think most experienced caravanners do service their 'vans & they are safe so probably what we have in the UK works ok already.
