I'm new so hope I'm not posting in the wrong place etc.
We are entering our 2nd year of protracted deliberations about whether can we/should take the leap from tent to caravan. Decided its time to stop lurking here and ask some of the questions we pondered for so long!
We have limited space at home for storage to the point that I am not convinced we could fit a caravan on the drive even for short periods of prep/packing before/after trips.
Is there anyone out there in a similar position?
Or maybe it's essential to have space at home for at least some of the time to make caravaning possible?
I would be really grateful to hear from others.
Thanks for reading.
PS what's the netiquette around asking more questions? Start a new topic or add to this one??
I am sure many people have no space available at all at home and take what's necessary to the storage site to the van. I run a site on the somerset/wiltshire border and have storers who do this. (one space available under cover at present + outside)
PS next question start a new thread.

The closer to your house you can get storage the easier it is for when going away. I am lucky to have have enough room on the drive to get the caravan there a day or two before we go away. The brother in law on the other hand has a 30 minute drive to get to his van. The only thing we have in common is once the season starts your van is loaded with everything you would normally need, so when going away all you have to do is stock up with bedding and fresh supplies of food and drink.
We pay £200 a year for storage, it has CCTV etc but some sum bag still attempted to nick the van, so good hitch/wheel clamps are essential.
We are now in our fourth year of caravaning after 40 glorious years of tenting and trailer tenting, we wish we had tin topped earlier. No regrets.
Hi we keep ours in storage but are lucky enough to be able to bring it home to load up - I agree with previous posts though its not essential to be ale to have the van at home, but the nearer the storage to home the better - if you can store in a CaSSOA registered storage site then it could reduce the cost of your caravan insurance - it did for us, and its a really secure site, but we have to have locks on it for the insurance, but I can't imagine you wouldn't have hitch and wheel locks to be honest.
Ps thanks for asking about new threads etc I'm new and wasn't sure either !!
We moved from tenting just over a year ago. We use storage about 20 mins away. We have never brought the van home. We don't pack the van for a trip Only thing we do is move summer stuff (awning, deck chairs, cool box, bbq etc) out of it for autumn and take all liquids put for winter. When we go we pack clothes in the car - just like you would if going to a static. We then pick up van on route. We don't take food with us ( we may bring some perishables back in the car an leave a few bits in the van if going again soon eh coffee tea etc) and the fridge is always empty when travelling. We drop van off in storage on the way home. Basically we treat the van as a big camping trailer with equipment in it and the car has the personal stuff.
We could get ours on the drive, but the road is narrow and it isn't easy to reverse it onto the drive, so we just load the car up with whatever we need and transfer it to the van before we go anywhere. We store on a CaSSOA gold site about 15 minutes from home and its £400 a year.
Grampian91 you have reminded me that we should have some storage lined up prior to buying otherwise we could risk having a caravan on our hands and no storage, just a place on a waiting list.
I pay about £400 a year for storage but it is very secure. It's about ten minutes drive from home and we just throw everything in the boot of the car and then hitch up the van. Obviously some stuff like bedding stays in the van all summer and kitchen stuff etc but everything else we just load up and unpack quickly when we get to site. Compared to putting up a tent it is so quick and easy.
We keep ours in storage as we have no room at home either. Like said already, once you start the season or if you use all year round, its only a case of food and clothes to take. Get some of those plastic lidded storage boxes and put your things in those. Thats what we do. Pack them the day before then just put them in the car and go. Also the closer to you the better I say.
we looked at a gold certified storage site thats 15 miles from home and a bog standard storage yard less than a mile away. The difference on my insurance worked out (after comparing the two prices) to be 12 pound. Take into consideration a 30 mile round trip each time we take the van out and it was a no brainer. So look around for storage and compare insurance quotes etc. Best of luck.

We don't have room whatsoever outside our house. We load car up then pick van up from storage. Ours was £355 last year for cassoa silver site. They have recently been awarded gold so not sure if the prices will go up. We are due to pay in feb. I too like the idea that we are not advertising we are away. We use the aldi version of the no water cleaner to clean the outside and it's great. Takes no time at all to do the whole caravan.
On another note, it kicks my butt to make sure the van is all clean and sorted ( inside, bathroom etc ) before we put it in the storage yard. I fear that if it was on the drive I would leave it till we got home and then stress about finding the time to do it whilst the children are in the house alone and OH is at work.
We changed to a caravan this autumn, having previously had tents and trailer tents. We do have room on our drive but think we will opt to keep it in storage where it is at the mo. Only £200 a year for us for secure storage 1-2 miles from home. We may bring it home for a start/end of season hose down etc but don't plan to keep it on the drive.
We finally took the plunge having said for years we never would. Our camping season was becoming very short, limited to warm nights due to my asthma whereas now we have a much longer season. Decided not to go this winter but who knows in the future.... We're really pleased we took the plunge. We had some teething problems so was very handy the dealer was local so it could go back under its 3mth warrantee.

If you use cases and bags for clothes in the car it's good if they can all then go inside each other when empty so storing them whilst away doesn't take up much space in the car boot or under a van seat.
We have the space at home however we would never get it up the street due to lack of parking (there is sometimes only enough space to get the car through without the van on the back )
we store the caravan about 10 mins away and pay £330 however we used to pay £450 on a different site they increased the rates and we moved it .
Check that the storage will be open to you ( but secure) at all times that you may want to get the van .
Our last storage was daylight hours which is fine until we wanted to leave at midnight to travel to cornwall .
