I'm looking to buy our family's first caravan. We are looking for a used/new 4-berth, but are restricted by the towing limit of our car (Mazda 5 ,2013 , 1,6 Diesel), which is 1200kg. We have £5000 - 11500 to spend.

We have a young 2 child.

What other models should I be considering? And what are people's opinions of the lightweight caravan?

We used to have a cristall sprint caravan which had a maximum weight of 1000Kg and was a four berth.  We had it for four years and it was excellent.  They don't make them anymore but sprite and Eldis make similar models.

we have an Elddis Firestorm 400 it has an L shaped dinette at the rear which can be made up into a small double bed which we leave permenantly made up, in the front there are two small seats which would suit two small children or it also makes a double. Its gross weight is 1060kg 900kg empty

we had been looking at a sprite it had a fixed bed but its maximum was about 1220kg, google them they may have a lighter model

We had the same problem with our Xsara picasso, it is limited to 1300kg, we looked on preloved and E.Bay and just    typed in lighweight caravans, we finally found our van on preloved..

we had the same issue also.

Our 2006 Bailey Ranger 470/4 is MTPL of 1179kg MRO of 967kg.

Great for us great for the kids. A really modern van We love it and would recommend.

We saw one ours on ebay and after viewing returned to buy for under £6k with awning etc

We looked at all of the above when we traded up last year, the downside to the venus range though was it only had wallboard in the shower cubicle, no propper moulded plastic lining. I know where there is a nice good condition 2006 Zenith 4 berth for sale with a 2yr warantee, it was our traded in caravan, they are asking about 6k for it, but at this time of year it should be good to get a bargain pricewise.

I made the trip down to Venture caravans at Northampton last year to have a look at the Adria Altea Tay (aka SportLine 432PX) and I have to say it ticked all the box's for towing with my firms VW Golf 5 Door Hatch 1.6 TDi BlueMotion.

Will probably spend around £8k on a used one when the time comes, although there are plenty of used ones around at the budget you mention.
