Having been motorhomers for the last ten years, we decided to try caravanning and subsequently invested in a new Swift Musketeer TD. We are very satisfied with the van apart from one thing. If towing in the rain, water enters the front locker and allows things inside to get wet. I took it back to the dealers (South Yorkshire Caravans of Dinnington) but was assured that this was acceptable and the front locker was not meant to be completely waterproof especially in driving rain. I was also assured that water couldn't enter the main caravan by this means. Can anyone give an informed opinion on this as I`m not completely convinced.
Don't know how informed my opinion is...... But some caravans have a "wet locker" where you can put wet items - lightweight awning for example. They are generally a plastic self contained built in box with a door. The door normally has a rubber seal which is standard on most caravans and I would not have thought should let water in.
Perhaps the locking mechanism could be packed out with a spacer or washers? to tighten up the seal.
If the box is as I describe, then water should not enter the caravan.

Front locker as in Gas bottles??? isn't a 'wet locker'.
and might well let in water but it should drain out naturally. If it is as oxter describes then the locking/seals need attention.
Ah.. If Stephen means the gas bottle locker, not a wet locker at the side, I agree with the last post. Front box is not waterproof in most vans.
The heading was "wet locker" which led me on.
Front lockers have air vents on the floor to help dissipate any build up of gas that could escape from the bottle or pipe, you could cover them with a weighted waterproof material whilst travelling, but uncover them when sited and the gas bottle is in use.
Our Swift Challenger van just been back to the factory for some warranty issues, included in that was to replace the front locker as it was letting the rain in. Does the the door Bow in the middle? If you visit the Swift owner forum site you will several of us who have had replacement doors or a 3rd lock put on them to stop the rain.
All the vans I have owned (caravans) The front locker is open to the elements when on the road especially when driving in rain. As long as this does not get through the bulkhead which is sealed, no problem. It must be open on its floor in case of gas leaks, thus you do not put anything in it that can get wet whilst on the road, but when parked it should stay dry.
On ours the strut is in the middle and pushes the door out which leaves a gap between the door and rubber seal.
We had the third lock fitted which stopped the locker getting soaked when towing in the rain. Unfortunately we were returning from a site just before Christmas and noticed the door had started to let the rain spray back into the locker.
must be an age old swift fault, our swift cornice is getting on now and no where near as young as some of yours but the front locker do's have the same problem.
until I read this thread I'd just put it down to our 'van's age, any how my solution was quite simple really...I've taped a plastic sheet into the channel around the edge of the opening so it forms a sort of curtain behind the locker door, now when the locker door is shut the rain can't get into the locker
------------- no tin tent outings booked as yet ,just another cruise in Sept' booked so far
I think my minds at rest now, just didn't want to think I was being given a line by the dealer. Will use a plastic sheet inside and consider a third lock, Thanks to all who contributed.
Never had a Swift van with a leaking front locker. They are not supposed to leak so don't take any notice of the dealer. Talking rubbish. Only van we have had that leaked was our last Bailey?
There is a problem with some Swifts from 2011/12 that had the locks too far apart. Swift have been correcting under warranty. Maybe yours is one of those?
Mine on my 2012 Sterling could get a bit wet towing in very heavy rain ... the locks on my 2014 Swift (same bodyshell, locker design) are much closer together and the door does seem to be more securely held in place.

Are you happy with the layout In the new van Iain.
Completely unrelated but just had to say to Stephen what a lovely caravan you've bought. We decided it wasn't quite big enough for us but I really really liked it. Enjoy! (When you've gotten your seals sorted)
