Afternoon all. Been to check the 'van and all seems fine with regard to damp. Wife suggested some open bowls of salt in various places just to be on the safe side. I have a concern that they will attract mice. Does anybody have experience of mice being attracted by salt?
A waste of time in my opinion. The air is damp. Air is contantly coming into a well ventilated van and circulating with that moisture. You cannot suck all that atmosphere dry with a bit of salt.
Salt is highly corrosive anyway.
I don't know that mice like salt do they? Cheese yes - salt ??

All you are doing with salt or any moisture trap is extracting all of the water from the air that is passing through the van, leaving you with little pools of water that will evaporate back into the air.
Just put the heating on for a few hours a couple of days before you want to start using it again
As Steve says, salt could attract moisture from anywhere. However, when I had a caravan I put a dish of table salt in the front and the back of the caravan. It did seem to attract moisture and the caravan always felt dry, but more importantly in my view, it also seemed to act as an air freshener and the van always smelled clean and fresh while it was in storage.
I also put citronella blocks (the type you hang in wardrobes) in the toilet, wardrobe, and the cupboards to deter any creepy crawlies and of course made sure there were no crumbs, forgotten packets of biscuits or other food remnants left inside as these are certain to attract rodents.
I used to store mine in a farm barn and never had a problem with mice, although the farmer used to put down trays of poison to control rats so perhaps the mice didn't stand much chance.
I wouldn't have thought salt would attract mice...cows maybe!
As has been said, salt will simply draw the moisture thats naturally present within the air; an adequately ventilated van is far better.
If however, you do decide on placing salt in the van, do so with care, as should the bowls overfill, there is a corrosive element to salt that can stain certain surfaces (colleague damaged his front chest of drawers with salt - he no longer uses salt or any other form of moisture trap).
I have had one of those Aldi dehumidifier boxes in mine all winter. I have read all pros and cons opinions on here.
I really am in two minds. All I can say is that it was full of water when I went and checked today and the rest of my van is bone dry everywhere no condensation or anything. Of course that could be a coincidence.
I am quite happy though. Will stick with it for now.
I have used a bowl of salt in our van for years with no problem the van always smells fresh if there is a lot of moisture in the van the salt will go hard if not it will stay soft.
a dehumidifier works by drawing air thro it so if the air is damp out side it just pulls it thro the gas drop holes thats why they fill with water so fast .
Leave your blinds and curtains open this will allow any sun we get to warm the van and stop condensation, ive proved this the last two years. To stop the nosey folk looking in,get some mesh curtains and just stuff them in the back of the curtain rail.
Of course if you have a newer caravan it will have fly screens fitted, does the same thing to nosey folk.
