We just so happened to pass a self service weighbridge yesterday on travel between sites. It weighed each axel. But the caravan axel weighed in at 100 kg over its listed mtplm
so we don't have much stuff in the van. Clothes, cooking stuff, food etc and have no idea what we can take out. Even the awning is in the car already. And all our chairs are already lightweight type
based on what i see some people unload from their tardis, we aren't as overweight as many!
the car is well within limits, but no space to put anything in there really.
so what would have happened if vosa and plod where weighing us?
If they are true to form as with lorries, they won't let you carry on without unloading(depending how it's loaded and how much overweight)if your lucky they will give you a warning and let you go,just remember that they are like VAT inspectors in that they have no sense of humor, but they do a serious job and are 110% safety orientated, they don't want you to be hurt or for you to hurt other road users, try to spread your load evenly around the van and not over the axle,or empty your van,and re weigh it,1oo kilos is two hundred weight in old money.

If you think caravan was not overloaded then possibly you did not use weighbridge properly, at a weight check you drive across scales under supervision, you need to go across slowly at uniform speed to get accurate reading, sometimes you are required to back up & go over again if they are not happy. This is my experience with HGVs. Or weighbridge may not even have been working properly. 100kg over over if you were carrying no specific heavy items sounds odd but motor mover if fitted needs to be included in payload
If you were stopped & one axle was over but you were within gross train weight of towcar then they would allow redistribution of load if that was possible to get weights correct, but you might still get fined.
If you were seriously overweight then they would issue immediate prohibition so you could not move vehicle until you had made arrangements to get it sorted. This is case if HGV is caught overweight by more than a certain percentage.
100Kgs does sound a fair bit if you believe that you've packed light anyway, but then again, you would be suprised what you accumulate and don't think of.
I would get another weigh-bridge report to compare against.
If you do have a weight/payload issue though, you might want to consider contacting your dealer to discuss whether the MTPLM of the van can be increased or not. This is model and chassis dependent, but you might be able to re-plate to allow for an additional 40-50kgs.
Quite often caravans are specified with a lower maximum permissible weight than is needed so that they can be legally towed by a larger variety of towcars. The manufacturers can issue a plate with a higher maximum weight value ( for most models anyway ). There is a charge to admin costs unless it is done at purchase.
If it was a twin axle van and I think you said it was then maybe the van is not sitting as it should check the height of your tow ball and make sure your van is sitting as it should this can effect your van/axle weight.Ian

Thanks all. So far we have found 60kg of stuff we can off load that is not being used. But not much else can go!
we were unsupervised, and my first run was too fast, but it told me so. I hadn't thought of speed changes, although we have clawler speed, so hoped this was ok.
i can take a little comfort in it being wrong...although the car readings seemed smack on when i compared with the manual
going to get a second read somewhere to compare....like i say we just so happened to be passing.
incidentally we are well within gtw by 1000kgs
single axle. No mover fitted
Your saying not much else can go. But you dont have much choice.
If you get stopped your going to be fined heavily and it maybe the end of your journey unless you can get someone to come and offload some of your stuff.
You could see if you can uprated your weight as I had mine done last year see your dealer as they will no if it can be done and get a new plate for you
To do it correctly the car needs to be un hitched. If you have a quarry near by they may weigh it for you and be accurate as the are checked on a regular basis. I work with VOSA and often see them doing the checks. Goods are unloaded and collected at a later date if a vehicle is or a prohibition notice can be issued and movement prevented. Don't forget that the tow vehicle axle weights can be checked and you would be surprised how many people overload the rear axle of a vehicle. Check your handbook. Rear axle limits on cars are not really that generous, consider 2 rear adults, caravan on the towbar and a bit of luggage in the rear and it doesn't take much at all to go over the limit.
I would take your outfit to another weigh bridge where you park and get a static reading. Just walking on a weigh bridge will cause it to rock and give a false reading so I wouldn't trust one that reads your weight as you drive over it. 100kg is equivalent to 4 bags of cement and is a fair weight to try to lose.
Any chance that the OP could state where he did this self weighing. I would appreciate the opportunity to give our motorhome a try on it, if in the area.
------------- How come when some people visit the fountain of knowledge, they only gargle!!!
The fact is that if you are over weight be it gross weight or just one axle then you are breaking the law and VOSA will prosecute you with out doubt They know the law and yow can't talk your way out of it and also remember if they find one thing wrong then they will go through everything that's the way they think so beware that is their job and they are very good at it.Ian

There is no way the op's caravan could have been 100kg overweight as they describe it. They either used weighbridge incorrectly or it was faulty. As suggested take outfit to public weighbridge & weigh it. If weighbridge is too busy to allow them to unhitch caravan to weigh, then weigh outfit, drop caravan off somewhere & then weigh car.
