Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions of keeping wasps away from the awning etc? we were up at Dunbar last year & there was hundreds, my wife hates them, were going upto Haggerston Castle soon & may have the wasp thing again.

I don't think putting a slice of ham in the the long grass is the right solution and won't be appreciated by the next campers when it has attracted bluebottles and is covered in maggots.
We always set up wasp traps. Use any sort of dish, bottom part of a coke bottle works well. Then fill with a mix of coke, beer, wine etc. They will be attracted to the sweetness and drown in the liquid after getting intoxicated. Put wasp trap in bin when leaving pitch.

Not sure what there called but smoke rings are suposed to be very good, burn for hours,
im sure a forum member will know what they are called and were to get them
Malt vinegar, sprinkled liberally around all entrances to the awning. You might smell like a chip shop, but wasps get one sniff of that and turn around and leave.
It's also very good to put on your skin if you get stung.
My daughter asked me the other day - what is the POINT of wasps??? I couldn't answer.....do they actually serve a purpose other than trying to sting everyone?
Blow up a child's balloon and just hang it outside the awning. It looks wasp nest shaped so other wasps tend to not go near it.
The wasp trap above works well. Mixture of cola, teaspoon of jam and squirt of washing up liquid works well. Cola and jam to attract, the washing up liquid destroys the surface tension of the liquid making it harder for them to get out.
The purpose of wasps is to make more wasps and perpetuate the species. A bit like humans, only wasps do it without ruining everything else as well.
I once sprayed a wasp in the house with insect killer. Believe it or not I was quite upset as the thing took ages to die. I wouldnt do it again. Instead I would go for the sweet jar option - i put an unwashed jam jar about outside or similar. Not ideal as I am still killing them and it doesnt please me.
Electric tennis racket you can buy will shock and kill them.
Cheap hair spray also stuns them.
I have been looking at the Waspinator has anyone used these reviews?
Also I have heard burning pine cones in a tin etc can also get rid of them as they hate the smell - not tried this yet but will do this summer if they are bad.
