My first post!!
'Someone' has put the blue chemical into the top of my Thetford 165 instead of the base. Should I try to wash it out? Or is it ok to leave it to just flush through?
Thanks.
The blue might stain the bowl a little as you flush with it.
------------- We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.

Wont do any harm, just let it flush into the bottom tank.
In fact, I find it easier to put the blue in via the toilet bowl with the shutter open......Mick
Firstly, the advice is not to let the blue liquid make contact with the toilet sealing rubber on the cassette as it will cause damage to it. However, in your case it can't be avoided so what I would do is flush all of the blue from the top tank into the bottom cassette and as it hasn't been used and contaminated you can save it in a separate plastic container for future use. Then remove the cassette tank and thoroughly flush it around the rubber etc. with a hose or watering can to wash a way any remaining blue fluid. If you clean the cassette immediately afterwards I don't think any harm will come to the rubber seal.
It may be wise to flush the top tank out with clear water as well by filling it up and then pumping into the cassette tank.

Surely the blue that's been 'inadvertently' put into the flush tank will be heavily diluted, (7 litres of water in flush tank), so I'm not convinced it's worth saving. Normally you add only a small amount of water to the blue when added to the cassette.
There will be varied opinions as to whether leaving the blue in the tank will be safe or not, however I would partly agree with Tango and err on the side of caution and drain in off; it doesn't take long after all and it's no great loss.
Ah, hold on. The penny has just dropped and realised the Op has a Thetford 'porta potti' model (does say in the thread but didn't click since this is the caravanning section).
In this case, I would certainly be cautious enough to wash out and put it down to experience.
I have continuously said how valuable books are and to quote from the first edition of the Caravan Handbook on page 178 under the handy tips section it states as follows:
'It's best to introduce liquid chemical directly into the holding tank rather than via the toilet bowl. If neat chemical gets on to the rubber seal that keeps the open/close blade water tight, it can cause damage'.
So my post was merely related to what I had read but to make sure I had got my facts right I got the book out to double check. After all, that's what related caravanning books are published for.
Even though I have the book I don't always adhere to exactly what they say myself as you are supposed to add the blue liquid directly to the holding tank via the spout but I usually cheat by adding neat blue very steadily directly through the toilet bowl with the flap open but yes you are quite right that it does state neat liquid and not diluted.
(does say in the thread but didn't click since this is the caravanning section).
Thanks for taking time to reply, just wondering though
Is there a problem having this thread in the caravanning section?
