hi guys still a newbie on here ,just read my hand book for my baily pageant moselle 2000 regarding max nose weight and it says 100kg..just weighed the van and its saying 88.6 kgs with what we have in the front storage box...the car i will be towing with is a mondeo 2 ltr deisel on a 06 plate ..please can any one tell me if this nose weight is going to be ok to tow ???? regards neil
You take the max nose weight permitted on the van and then find out the max towball weight on the car's towball and you use whichever one is the lowest.
IE, the max nose weight on my van is 100kg.
The max towball weight on the car is 75kg.
So I must not have a van nose weight above 75kg, no matter what the van's nose weight says.

thank you for ya quick reply, well i cant find the towbars weight anywhere on the towball of the car as it was on the car when i bought it !!! so to be safe what would you recomend i do ???? and should i put any weight in my boot or just leave it empty ???
thank you so much guys,i will empty the front outside locker and take a weight to see if i can get the nose down to the 75kg,so do i keep my car boot empty or can i add some weight in there ???...
wow this is a lot to take in lol, well just by removing the gas bottle and tool box ive reduced the nose weight ...its now at 70.8 kgs is this better guys ???
It's my understanding that you need to get the nose weight to 5-7% of the max laden weight of the caravan and that this should also be no higher than your car's tow ball limit. So you should aim to get it to max towball limit within this range. Some cars obviously won't be able to tow safely if their limit is less than 5%, but the other factors ie cars kerb weight, train weight and towing capacity might also be limiting at the same time.
Your Mondeo has a noseweight limit of 75kg, I drove one for 7 years. The first thing to try to reduce the noseweight should be to take your EHU cable from the front locker and put it right at the back of tge van, that should drop it by at least 10kg and perhaps a little more. Moving relatively small weights from the front to the rear has an enormous effect, but do not overdo it and put too much weight at the back. An awning just behind the axle is another good thing to try.
However, until you have fully loaded the van as you would do to go away with everything in its place you will not be able to check the noseweight as it will be when you travel. It is worth doing so that you do not have a panic trying to balance it properly on the day you leave.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

My Volvo V50 also has a towball weight limit of 75 kgs. and the figures mentioned above I totally agree are just about right as this about the same what I aim for as well. The reasons are that if the noseweight is too light it will cause instability problems as the hitch weight pushes against the towball to operate the caravan brakes and if too heavy will push heavy on the rear of the car causing excessive pressure on the rear suspension and effectively starts to lift the front end of the car causing loss of traction which can be fatal in wet conditions as it can cause aquaplaning where all front tyre grip is lost completely. Scientifically tested, when the car initially pulls the caravan the wind will push against the front of the caravan thus reducing the noseweight slightly and the faster you travel the increasing pressure decreases the noseweight furthermore.
the car manufacturers recommended tow hitch download is there to a protect the tow bar anchor points & to keep within the weight capacity of the rear axle as the trailer down load (nose weight) detracts from the max rear axle load capacity so if the cars max load is say 1000kg & the caravan nose weight is say 100kg then this must be subtracted fro the max car loading so it is reduced to 900 kg the legal min noseweight for a trailer is 4% of the kerbweight of the tow car or 25kg
to all who have given me good sound advice ,thank you all very much...as i am new to the caravan world i just needed to try and get a understanding of the tricks of the trade so to speak , so i must keep my nose weight between the 72kg and max 75kg !!!! i got it now lol once again many thanks and any more tips on towing safety pleas post
