Hello all :-) (please ignore my slighly embarrassing username which I dont think I can change)

We are tempted to take the plunge for our first caravan. We tent camp which we love (and I will be sad to stop using our beloved tent and kit we have invested in) but think we would go more often and come home less tired if we had a caravan. I find the light mornings, lack of toilet, cold/damp and all the packing exhausting with 2 small children.

So today I fell in love with this rather old caravan -Abi Yorkshire Rose 1999 for 3.5k at a dealership. I liked it because (1) It is immaculate iniside and has everything we need. The seller said even they find it odd, it is as if it has not been used, which is why they kept it to sell on rather than traded it. It reportedly came from an old couple who traded it for a new caravan and had it from new (2) It is very light. We only have a Citreon C4 Picasso 1.6 vtr semi auto which has a low towing specification and buying a new car is not an option right now (3) The layout is perfect for us. It feels surprisingly spacious for its size and has bunks. My girls (aged 3 and 6) squabble horribly when they have to share a bad (4) It is reasonably cheap although I know it is still quite a bit for its age and I could get something newer and cheaper buying direct though the reassurance of buying it serviced via a dealer is worth something given we are clueless, and it comes with the usual starter kit.

So on the topic of us being clueless, I would appreciate the wisdom of the forum on this caravan. Obviously you cannot see it, but I can tell you it looks like new inside and there is apparently no damp. They man had his damp tester out to demonstrate this. We realise that our home will be its last home, but we don't want to/can't spend much now

Thank you in advance :-)

Sorry I meant share a 'bed' not a 'bad'! Although whenever they do have to share a bed it is bad. "She keeps pushing me".."I can't sleep".."She kicked me".. blah blah.

The first thing to do is a towing match ,Is your picasso a diesel ,the 1.6 110bhp is a good tug ,but a petrol semi auto will not do the job IMHO ,you really need to find out before committing yourselves and DO NOT take the salesmans word for it

Hi black fox, thanks for the reply. Ours is the diesel semi-auto. We got the towing specifications ourselves rather than from the salesman, as we were not sure it would tow. However, it looks like we need to stick to a lightweight as the semi-auto does not tow as well as the other models, though anecdotally people seem to report towing average sized caravans without much trouble. However, I would value further advice on this as we are not experts.

£3,500 is high for such an old van.

I see that you used the word 'apparently', when saying that there is no damp.

You are wise to be cautious - very cautious.

I would most certainly not take the word of the seller, no matter how much he flourishes his damp meter.

Before anything else, buy a damp meter of your own - reliable ones are now fairly cheap (and certainly cheap when compared with 3.5K)

Aldi do one (although that's not much use to you if they haven't got it at the time you require one) but it's German, digital, and within 1% accuracy of an industry standard Protimemter - an absolute snip at £16.

So, for only a bit more (if no luck at Aldi) you can get a fairly decent meter, and spend half an hour checking it for yourself.

Check *everywhere* - but particularly the corners adjacent to the floor, around the windows, and where the roof meets the walls - especially on the door side, because that's where the awning rail is and usually one of the first places to leak due to wind pressure pulling the rail when an awning is erected.

Around 10% - 15% moisture is OK. Over 15%, but less than 20% it needs some careful thought. Readings over 25% (and don't be surprised if you encounter some readings in excess of 40% - 60% !) mean that you walk hurriedly away, and count the cost of the meter as money well spent.

If, of course, the seller objects to you checking, you can draw your own conclusions.

Good luck with it.

Hmmmm I do feel you might struggle towing that size caravan with your car ,I have just bought my second picasso 1.6 but it's the 110bhp the lower ones won't do the job ,mine tows well but I only have a two berth van with so all up weight of around 1200 kg .you really need the full specs of your car and the loaded weight m.i.r.o of the van .then do a tow match to the nearest equivalent as that's a dealer special van .

It's to late to say oops when your stuck on a hill you can't get up or you damage your semi auto gearbox (expensive)

I also think the price is very high for a 15year old van ,ours is the same age ,check photo in gallery images we have had it 3 years and it cost me £800 it's very easy to get caught in the hype ,and rest assured a van that age will have issues to trap the unwary

Thank you black fox. I need to double check the car and be exact about it. I think it is only filled weight of 1100kg or perhaps a bit less, and thus under the recommended towing weight of the car. It really is quite small (the caravan), but just has a nice layout which is one of the reasons it tempts us. We will have to be very careful about not loading it up too much and putting heavier things in the car. I have been using the internet mainly. Is this how you would do a towing match?

Out of interest have you tried using the manual option on your car? We haven't. It looks complicated! But I wondered if it might help on a big hill for example.

With regard to price I have been in touch and said I think it is too much to see what they can do. Though I have found old adverts for the same caravan at similar prices, but some also a lot cheaper. But it is hard to compare because it is like new inside. Where did you buy yours? I am nervous of private sales, ebay etc due to not having the knowledge. And also have not found anything with this layout for this weight. All the small cheap caravans I have found are 2 birth. There are not any of this model for sale at the moment.

Thanks for the advice. Appreciate it :-)

I would say that when you are looking at vans more than about 5 years old, condition is probably more important than age. You could get a newer van for that money, then find out it has serious damp problems. Depreciation will be far less of an issue at that age than it would be with a nearly-new van. If you are certain it has no major damp problems, you really like it, and you are prepared to pay that amount, I would say go for it.

Incidentally, 1999 is 11 years newer than our caravan! It suits us though.

Best Regards,
Colin

Thank you Colin and Fredted. Colin it is in beautiful condition inside. It really looks like they didn't use it. You can tell the fittings are original due to their style so it has not been tarted up for sale. I do really like it, mainly due to the layout and condition.

We just need to sort out the Towing Match as this is a little touch and go. I am using the website you suggested fredted which is excellent. Just struggling to match because this old caravan is not listed so trying to find out the specifications.

Just find a van with the same weight as the one your after try

Towcar info .

That's a free one and you can jiggle the caravan to match the one your after ,do check the loaded weight of the van ,just re.checked mine due to this and it's actually 200 kg less than I stated at only 1000kg fully laden ,my car is the older picasso with a 5speed manual gearbox ,BHP is more important the 110bhp or 80kg engine is the one you need .you will get around 33mpg towing to

Just did a rough match based on the info you have supplied to date and it looks good though you do need to do it yourself ,it also seems that you will need to switch to manual gearbox mode? To tow properly .

Just wanted to update and say thank you again for all the advice. We did buy it and have just come back from our 2nd weekend away. We LOVE it! Few teething problems due to us not having a clue but solved by helpful fold on site. Will have to post some pictured as promised when I take some :)
