When I read of the constant poor aftersales service and build quality from various manufacturers and dealers I am happy that we took the choice of purchasing an older van rather than finance for a brand new one and its a road we will continue on in the future.

I know how nicely equipped new vans are but it appears after you've invested £12-£15k of your hand earned cash your pretty much left to the wolves with regard to service issues and manufacturing faults but many new owners seem to accept this as part of the risk or is it just me?

I'm pretty sure there are many others who are put off when reading these stories and issues posted here think the same.

I bought a new Bailey Orion last year, it has been excellent. I had a coupe of small niggles, the lamps at skirt level became loose (the self adhesive pads became detached from the lamps in the sun) and a couple of edging trims inside lifted.
When I took the caravan for a service I pointed out these niggles, they were rectified without question.
I asked the dealer if I could take the caravan in for its service on Monday afternoon when I got back from 3 Rivers and pick it up again on Friday morning on my way to Elvaston steam rally. No problem, the caravan was serviced and cleaned and ready for me to collect.
I can thoroughly recommend Stewart Longton Caravans of Chorley Lancs for their excellent service

OP..Have to agree, there are a lot of satisfied customers but it does seem a bit of a lottery with a new caravan.

We were looking at possibly changing and went to our local dealership but like you say after reading all the posts on here and actually seeing the poor quality and finish on some new vans for £18K upwards I will stick with what I have..its dry as a bone and well finished.

apart from having the money to spare it would be interesting to find out why people do buy new vans..

maybe it is as simple as having the money to spare.. i havnt so i would always buy an older one.. apart from up to date styling and interior décor they havnt changed that much over the last twenty years..

We haven't money to spare either, so we bought our old 1988 Elddis just before last Christmas 2013. It does us very nicely, and we have just got back from a week in West Norfolk with it. Fantastic! We are now busy planning our next trip.

Hi, just when are dealers going to realize there is more to selling caravans than putting salesmen in matching puffa jackets than leaving them to crow about how many units they,ve sold this month. while spending £1000,s on glossy adverts. because all the best advertising in the world is undone by a couple of unhappy customers making their experiences known to the public. its the dealer who should deal with the manufacturers to sort the problems as its the dealer who has all the clout by virtue of selling caravans on their behalf

I think you'll find that there are many new caravan owners who happy with there purchase and after-sales , you just don't here about it .
It's only dissatisfied customers that shout and moan on these forums   .
There are good dealerships about as well but you just here about the poor service that a minority offer

It doesn't matter if you have a £1000 caravan, or a £15,000 one it still does the same job,as long as it's dry and you keep it maintained what does it matter.

it must matter in some ways else nobody would spend the 15 grand or so on new vans.. he he..

i was looking at the freedom caravan site recently.. "for those on a tight budget" they only cost £10000..

i couldnt help but think they are using the wrong approach.. i cant see any tight budget that stretches as far as 10 grand for what in essence is a small basic caravan..

i dont begrudge folks spending money if they have it.. its what money is for but i do wonder some times..

i still come back to the only reason to spend it is cos you have it.. he he..

i wish i had more to spend but sadly i dont.. i quite fancy a small eriba but they cost too much for what they are..

trog

ps.. i own three cars.. a boat.. a caravan.. they all have one thing in common.. they are all twenty years old.. he he

AS has been said there aren't going to be any posts from the silent majority who are happy with their vans. There are also lots of disgruntled customers who have bought second hand and its ended in tears.

At least with a new caravan you have the dealers warranty, the manufacturers warranty and also a six year damp warranty.

I really dont know why folk buy new. Far better a couple of years old when the niggles are ironed out - and a sight cheaper.

Just as well though, as there'd be no second-hand ones for the more astute to buy!

Thank god for show-offs!

Let someone else take the financial hit and have all the issues sorted out.
Its a no-brainer for me.

We bought new in 2006 I decided from the beginning to service the van myself so after the first 12 months all warranties were void
We haven't had any issues that would really have justified a warranty claim
The van is well put together and being a bailey we knew what day it was going to be assembled and it was then delivered to us just over a week later
The reasons for buying new were :-
No one else had used it
Everything was brand new
We expected to keep it for a long time
Starting with a new van made it easy to keep in good condition
The price was not much more than the second hand vans we were considering
As has been said each to their own for us new was the way to go

Phil

We bought our Adria new and both the van and Venture Caravans have been excellent. Couple of small issues with Van both resolved quickly by Venture.

Adria vans seem so well put together, no fuss, very much the Ikea of the caravan world internally. No issues with leaking and guaranteed for 10 years anyway.
