Hello al 1st Question on here ref Caravan, on my cars towbar I only have 1 plug for the electric's, this was for a camping trailer ( When I was camping ), Now some one has informed me that you can get a Y split that does the van's lights and fridge and charge the leisure battery anyone have any ideas were I could buy this? ( online or a shop ) or should I just get the second socket put on?? Thanks
I'm guessing that you are referring to a Y splitter to go from twin electrics (7 pin) to a 13 pin socket (as used since 2009). Such a cable relies on you having twin electrics on the car to start with. You will need to get the second 7 pin connector wired up first. If you are going to do that you might as well just get a 13 pin socket fitted.
You might be able to use the splitter you have but it will only power the lights and indicators etc. No battery charging or fridge, That is what the grey side of the twin electrics was for but as I say its now a 13 pin socket instead.
Hope that helps.

the basic plug for lights mostly dosnt have a permanent power supply to it.. to power the vans fridge and charge its battery you need another socket wiring in..
i just did mine it required a 30 amp cable running from the cars engine compartment (battery) into the boot area this can then be used for the van power..
I assume you have a black 7 pin socket fitted to the car. If so this will only run the caravan road lights and will not power anything inside the caravan.
For this you need either a grey 7 pin socket adding or a 13 pin to replace the 7 pin you already have. What has your caravan got. Is it a black 7 pin and a grey 7 pin or a 13 pin. Ideally the caravan and car need to match.
The 13 pin plugs are better than the 7 pin, but if your van is wired with 2 x 7pins the adaptors to a 13 pin are a pain in the a***.
Thanks all for the Reply, Yes i have the 7 pin black ( For the lights ) and the Grey 7 pin i assume for the fridge and the battery? i was told i am able to get a y splitter to run from the 1 socket ( from my car ) into the black and grey 7 pin socket? is this nonsense? am i better to just get another socket fitted?
If your car has a 13 pin socket you can use the y splitter. If you only have a single 7 pin socket on the car you will need to have the 12S (grey) socket and wiring installed on the car.

Probably speaking out of turn but..... We don't bother connecting our battery charge/fridge connection. We only connect the van lights ect. Never been a problem. Get to site plug in ehu and within 10 mins we're up and running.

I was thinking the same thing although I suppose it might be nice to have your fridge cooling on the way to the campsite and the leisure battery charging but it seems a lot of expense and trouble getting an extra socket installed just for that. If you have EHU just plug in when you get on site.
The little caravan I used to have didn't even have mains electric. I filled the fridge with food, stuffed in loads of ice packs, then once at the campsite stuck the fridge on gas. I charged up my leisure battery at home and that powered all the 12v stuff in the caravan. It would have been nice to have EHU but I don't think I would have bothered adding an extra socket to the car...at the end of the day it is only adding extra strain on your car battery.
the second grey plug isnt essential in most cases..
i fitted mine because i do touring and use the car to keep the van battery topped up and in warm weather the fridge cool.. if all a van does is get towed to a site and hooked up to the mains you can manage perfectly well without the extra socket on the car..
I think that Su & Jas's comment was very valid. I agree a topped up battery and cold fridge are nice to have but an ATC is a safety feature designed to be on whilst towing.

Same here, Bob.I've kept food cool in the fridge simply by freezing meat for the next day or two and using ice packs. Having the fridge on 12v will only keep it at the temp it starts out at, so you still have to cool it down before you go. I've done 4-5 hours using this method on the road, and the food has still been cool when I've got where I'm going. I don't have a built in charger, so also charge the l. battery before I go.
the whole idea behind as someone already said if going abroad and wanting to bring some food with you ( stock up the fridge ) and to have the fridge cold and the battery charged up, i will be using the EHU on the site.
