Hi can someone help a newbie out please! When packing up from a lovely weekend/week of caravanning are you supposed to drain the water tank? If so how. Many thanks S.
We empty our hot water tank after every trip. For the two vans we've owned over the last 7 years, there's been a 'dump valve' inside (both have been yellow) in amongst the pipework.
We first ensure the pump is switched off, open all taps in the central position and then lift the dump valve 'up' and the water drains from underneath the van.
Just remember to close it once empty, else you'll spend hours filling up next time

Thanks Wilkolad I'll have a shuftie for the dump valve when we're next away. Also once you've turned off water heater can you empty the tank immediately or do you have to wait?
That all depends if you check your caravan noseweight or not which sounds very much like you don't being a newbie. The car also has a towball weight limit so checking the noseweight is important for more reasons than one.
If I empty the hot water tank on my caravan the noseweight is too light which then causes instability problems and if it's full with steel gas cylinders it's too heavy so after doing some thinking I came up with the best solution. Leave the water in the tank and change to lightweight gas cylinders and now the noseweight isn't far out when I hitch up. It just takes some minor adjustments to get it right before setting out so if I do the same on return I know it's near enough the same.
If you can leave the water in it's all the better as it saves having to bleed the water system every time you set up.
drain it before the winter frosts set in.. apart from that i dont think it matters if you do or you dont.. a good flush through every now and then is probably a good idea if you dont..
We usually empty it as part of our packing up routine. We certainly don't let it cool particularly.
Others will have a different approach, as Tango 55 explains. In our case our nose weight is spot on without a full tank.
We've always done this as part of our departure routine and, as we store away from home, have never forgotten it over the winter when things can freeze.
If you do empty the hot water tank make sure you switch off the heater if you are going to connect to an electric hook up before you refill the tank.
It is not good for the heater to have power when the tank is empty.
------------- We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.

That's sound advice actually and another reason to leave the water in the tank if possible as it could be a costly mistake if you do happen to forget.
Thanks for all your great advice! Will have to check the nose weight to see if emptying the tank is necessary. I am always careful about only turning on the water heater once the water has been connected.
We always ensure our water heater is off then empty the tank. Any water left in it until the next trip is not going to be great. Don't have a problem with nose weight or stability.
Never actually checked nose weight.
If the tank is full of water it doesn't slosh around, it's only if it's HALF full that the water will act like a bow wave sloshing from side to side. Basically the water tank has to be either empty or full with no exceptions that's why you have to juggle things around to see what's suits in achieving the correct noseweight for stability.
We're newbies as well, but our service engineer said it's best to get in to the habit of emptying the tank every time then you don't forget to do it when you really need to ie in the winter.
