We have a new elddis avante with a manual powr touch evolution mover.we find it really difficult to engage the movers and I think me and the oh are fit.The rollers are really stiff and it takes me down on all fours and my whole body weight to move the blooming thing.it feels really tightly sprung and I have the bruises on my shins and hands to prove it from when it releases.is this normal and is it because it's new and will slacken off?any tips welcome.
I found the same thing, i know it was fitted correctly, as being a mechanical/electrical engineer i always fit my own.The lever supplied is the extend-able type you can purchase for changing car wheels, and i have one of those which is a few inches longer when extended. I now use that one as it is surprising how much easier it is to operate with that little extra length of leverage.
mine takes some effort.. the extended wrench has to start off touching the ground on one side to engage without hitting the ground at the end of its travel.. its a price that has to be paid for doing both sides at once.. if the bar was removed and both sides done separately it would be a lot easier.. joining them together was a win some lose some situation.. he he
i can manage it but for some people it would be worth spending the extra on the motor engage one..

Same here. It does have a good spring to it! It does get easier the more you practice, it's a knack you acquire.
Yours does seem a bit tight though, from the way you describe it. Do you have a long wrench? Mine came with one, but the same as trog, you have to have it opposite and parallel with the ground, then pull through 180 degrees to engage. Then remember to start with the wrench level with the ground near the wheel to disengage.
its amusing really it would have all been worked out doing them one at a time.. then some clever bugger comes up with idea of the bar joining both sides together but it requires twice the effort to engage them..
to be honest i think it requires too much effort for anyone other than an able bodied male.. i am pretty sure my ex wife would not have been able to manage it..

ps.. coming off it the opposite.. it springs off and is best done with the wrench shortened.. it would have all worked nicely one at a time.. but two together.. hmmm..
Agree, it's harder. However, where I have to get into my drive, I have to pull over where there is a bank on one side, so I wouldn't be able to connect that side if they were not connected with a bar and would be going round in circles!
I only have a small lightweight caravan with a small mover, perhaps that's easier than a larger mover on a larger caravan. I can do it fairly easily, and I'm 5ft nowt and female.
i can do mine but money being no object in retrospect i recon i would happier with a motor engage one.. he he
apart from learning the knack of doing it i dont think there is anything wrong with the OPs mover.. they are just like that.. the method works but not in an ideal way.. he he
Ours has just been fitted a month ago and it's not as hard as described. Even my 12 year old son can do it (only just mind). Apart from how tight the unit is on the tyre I can't think of anything that would cause such issues.
thanks for all the above. will go and measure the distance between the rollers and tyres. we have a short handle that came with it with a small amount of extention but I did notice that when the dealer was demonstrating it to us he had a long handled wrench so maybe investigate that too.
the longer the wrench the easier it is.. it would be impossible with a short one:)
but hard is a relative word and twelve year olds are quite handy at least i was when twelve.. mine is set up correctly only been on the van for three months and it takes some force to do it.. dont think yours is unusual cos it isnt..
if they are too far away from the tyre they will slip.. that heavy spring pressure is there for a good reason..
I wasn't suggesting that mine was somehow unusual. If the process was easy then there would be no need for an automatic version. I was simply suggesting that it shouldn't be that hard to engage that it should pull an adult over. Yes it has a kick but not enough to pull me to the floor.
Mine was fitted by a dealer and as far as I can tell was installed correctly. It hasn't slipped yet even on inclines and it's a heavy van.
I got mine fitted last year and it was done by a fitter that powrtouch use.
He went through a demo when fitted but I could not try it myself as just had a groin hernia op two days before.
It was a month after fitting that I first used the MM and was surprised at how tight it was and still is, I can manage to engage disengage no problem but can see how it could be an issue for some.
As mentioned the fitter used a longer wrench than that supplied by powrtouch.
I might get one of those..
------------- It is a wise man who has something to say.
It is a fool who has to say something.
We have had 2 manual motor movers and always used the extended wrenches with them.
We have now gone for the power MM (Powrtouch) and wished we had stuck with the manual one.
The power one is too slow and too many things can go wrong with it as I have found out from our own experience and from talking to others that have had them.
I have the extendable bar and still find it hard to engage the rollers, but manage ok.
Slight deviation from the op's question,I had a blowout last year which totally destroyed the tyre,(not old,and thankfully did very little damage)and wondered if the pressure applied onto the tyres by the motor mover over time, somehow delaminated the tread from the carcass,I admit to putting cheap tyres on (made in China)but they must pass all the safety tests surely.
I have a manual one on my new to me (2010 ) caravan and it is a devil to engage and flys off when disengaging.
I had the auto on my last van and it was a dream.
