We had to drive past an exploded lorry engine whilst towing. All the associated fluids, oil, diesel and radiator fluid that had spilled on the road ended up sprayed all over the caravan and car. We have managed to get it off the sides but the front, roof and back are now deeply stained. Fenwicks is not cutting through it. I want to cry it has knocked thousands off of our van's value as it looks so bad. Is there a product strong enough on the market that can shift these stains?

You can try Tcut but be very careful as caravan paint is thin. If its that bad then contact your caravan insurance. Did you notice company name of truck or can you find it out? Your insurer will want to know this if you claim.

Didn't get the registration of the 40 tonner - too busy avoiding engine bits! However it was an Argos lorry on the A66 just coming out of a 2 and a half hour stopped traffic jam on Monday. The truck had roared past us up a hill only to blow it's engine at the top! I was thinking about contacting the insurance company but was unsure if this was a good enough reason. It looks awful, I wouldn't buy it second hand, wouldn't give it a second look, so sad I could cry.

See what your insurance company suggests, worth a call.
If you still have need to clean yourself then give a tub of Silky a go. It's superb stuff and I've yet to find a cleaning job it won't tackle on the van.

Thanks for that. We actually have a tub in the van that I had forgotten about. You have just reminded me! I will give it a go and then see if I still need to try and claim. Thank you again.

I carry a tub of ordinary washing powder in the caravan and it's amazing what simple cleaning products can do so try that first before anything else. If it fails then try another product.

There are companies that do professional polishing, they have rotary machines with different grades of polish,We are having  to do this when our caravan cover left marks all over that wont come off.I would not try it yourself as you may damage the paint or the windows. But im sure they would make it look like new.Not cheap but worth it for the money it will add to your van

I wouldn't contact your insurance company unless you definitely want to make a claim. They will record it as an accident whether you then follow through and claim or not. If you do claim don't assume the truck insurance will pay out. There are some very strange rules in this sort of claim around proving negligence. Friends had their car damaged when a trailer wheel came off in front of them on a dual carriageway. Exchanged details etc, but the claim was still picked up by our friends car policy, they lost excess, no claims etc, as the trailer had been serviced and therefore wheel failure wasn't the drivers fault!

If in the course of an accident a truck spills fuel on the road & damages surface the council will claim for cost of road repair so as you know identity of truck operators & time/place they can hardly deny responsibility. If paintwork is actually damaged then contact your insurance.

To check if it can be cleaned work on a small section first & if that don't work then leave the rest & claim.

Thank you for all your advice. Going back this morning for another go with the various product suggestions and if this fails we'll try the insurance route. Thanks again x

The Police will know.
We had a related incident some years ago.
My wife was driving alone along a dual carriageway when a lorry trailer's axle disintegrated, causing it's huge wheels to go off bouncing down the road into traffic. One wheel bounced onto her roof, barely missing the windscreen; a very close shave indeed.
My wife was, understandably, very shaken and grateful to be alive. The road was mayhem so she didn't stop, but when back home we found a large dent in the roof.
While she had no details, the Police are always involved in such an incident, and they proved to be very helpful in identifying the lorry and haulage company, who paid for the repair without complaint.
