All the companies including AA, RAC , Green Flag and insurances so far say max.7 metres including hitch /couplings. Lots of people have 7m plus caravans. What do they do?
Fred.
You need RAC Arrival through the Caravan and camping Club or Red Pennant through the Caravan Club both of these specialise in caravan recovery and have no length restrictions
Are you over 50? If so read Saga Breakdown cover t&c's carefully. They refer only to 'standard caravan' with no mention of length as far as I can see. Cost for full cover UK/continental & home start is about £121 pa. They use AA for breakdown, same company as Saga, I think.

That would be Mayday through the CC Red Pennant is their European holiday cover. I know from experience that Mayday does a fantastic job.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Very expensive!
Mayday cover with absolutely everything included is £98 but if your caravan breaks down they will cover it and if you break down whilst away from your caravan they will collect the caravan from wherever it is. The only two that do this are Mayday and Arrival.

Its expensive but did you check what you get for your money?
They will take you to your destination, Take the car to be repaired if it cam. If not they will take you home again.
They will also put your van into storage and then take you home etc.
Cheap breakdown cover wont cover the caravan breaking down. If the van cannot be towed it will be thats commercial recovery and we can arrange it but you will have to pay for it.
Yep, another Mayday vote from me and agree that you get a good and very comprehensive package. My van is 7.6 if you include the hitch (previous only a tad shorter) and never had any issues. I specifically remember discussing length with Mayday and they confirmed body length excluding the 'A' frame/hitch.
Some good replies thank you.
I will be 70 when my car insurance is due in February. Red pennant and RAC arrival wanted £ 400 to £500 for breakdown only?? We have clean licences and a couple of tiny other driver 2010/11 claims. My basic car insurance would be about £230. I'm looking for car insurance with Euro recovery for about £400/450 total.
Best so far, Direct Line £347 but -7 metre length?
I will look at the suggestions above tomorrow and report back.
I will look at Saga again, used them once years ago but usually about £100 dearer than my best quotes.
Don't know how good these companies are as I have never called out for a breakdown or made any claims, touch wood.
Thanks again,
Fred.
Dont forget your direct line cover will only recover the van if its towable... If the car breaks down they will tow the van. If the van needs recovery its not covered.
Same with most breakdown companies.
The arrival and Mayday schemes will recover the van if its not towable.
Mayday looks very good for UK only. I would use it in future if I stop going to Europe. I notice they use Green Flag. I phoned Green Flag and they only use caravan body length and do Europe so I will probably go with them £106 and do my car insurance separately.
Thank you very much for all your replies.
Fred.
