We have been pursuing a replacement van and have just been notified that our e bay bid is the winning amount. Can anybody advise as to safest protocol with regards payment, inspection pre- collection and verification of vendor ownership.
We sold our last caravan on Ebay. I wouldn't pay a penny until you have seen the caravan, then do a bank transfer. If you have seen the caravan then pay by bank transfer on collection. You could also pay cash. The buyer for our last caravan paid £13000 in cash.I checked every note whilst OH was showing then around it,
If the caravan is as stated in the description then you should pay up.
Many Ebay sellers are genuine and it's a shame that the rogues spoil it for everyone else. They are out there so beware.
Beware of the dreaded damp. The first caravan I bought off Ebay had damp but we had a few good holidays in it before we part exchanged it.
It also depends what you have paid for it.
Re ownership they should have the CRiS document in their name. They may also have service receipts etc.I would ask to see these definitely to verify ownership. If you have paid a lot for it you also need to check if there is any finance owing on it or they may have a receipt that shows it is fully paid for.
We are selling our motorhome on Ebay at the moment and most people enquiring are very, very wary. I don't blame them but it doesn't help us trying to sell it.
Just take care and I hope everything is fine and you have had nothing to worry about. Most people are genuine sellers.
If you are winning bidder then you have purchased the caravan. Its not to go and view the caravan before paying!
Of course they can't make you pay if you change your mind when you see it but there might be a few choice words from the seller unless he has told some porkies as to condition etc...
To be honest all the viewing, Cris checks etc should really be done before bidding, unless you have already done that??

The van is 2014 so damp won't be an issue. No checks were done prior to bidding due to time constraints. We are happy with the pictures seen and as its so new it's pretty standard. My issue is - is it genuine (as won for a very good price) and how can I check ownership - as if it isn't owned by the eBay seller I'm obviously not passing any money over.
For a caravan of that value you need to do a Cris check yourself. You need Cris number & do check yourself on cris website cost £14.95. If seller is genuine he will be fully cooperative in this. A UK built caravan will be Cris registered. An import, ie German make may not so you will need to see original purchase receipt.
But mostly you need to use your sense. If it is a private sale then all dealing must be done at seller's address. If it is a dealer then at his premises. Do not pay anything until you have viewed caravan & you has ascertained seller has title.
Thanks, that's all what I assumed, so just need the seller to get in touch now. Do you kniw how can I check if there's any finance outstanding on it? Cris is just ownership isn't it?

A 2014 van being sold already??
First thing I'd be checking is yes, the finance side of things.....
I am a little surprised that such a new caravan is being sold on ebay. It would make me very wary. It could of course simply be that someone is hoping to get a better price than with a trade-in, but I would still be wary.
Personally, if I could afford a van that new I would be going to a dealer for peace of mind. I bought our caravan off ebay, but I inspected it very thoroughly before I made a bid, as I did with several previously, even though I was only spending £500.
2014 van so you must be buying this from the first owner. You need to check with Cris youself. You should expect the seller to have all keys and dealer paperwork. Sales invoice, handbooks, service book etc and you do need to check for damp. Don't assume a 2014 van will be damp free. Some new ones are.
You also need to see the van at the seller's home ate see evidence that it is his home. Energy bill etc.
I would pay by bank transfer. I assume it is a significant amount.
When I sold mine for about 8K the buyer phoned CRIS there and then and got a clear report. I had a receipt showing it was bought new for cash. We went to our local shopping centre where he withdrew the money from his bank and then carried it 50yards and paid it into mine.
Trouble with bank transfer was that it would not be confirmed as being in my account until the following day. That wasn't good enough.
I would want a good reason from the seller as to why they are selling such a new van and be convinced it was correct.
I am finding it difficult to believe anyone would bid for and win a caravan on Ebay for a significant amount of money without viewing or doing checks first??
OP says its a replacement caravan so not first time caravanner/buyer..
Am I being too cautious or have I missed something?
