I am looking to install rear view cameras or camera to my caravan, but I don't want to be drilling into my vans body, can anyone recommend a way of mounting a camera with any other way?
i was thinking about running the wires into the tail light and trying to accommodate the sender unit behind the tail light using the tail light to power the sender and camera but that still leaves the issue of the unsightly cable and a method of fixing the camera on to the van.
my next plan is to run the cable underneath the van and run it through one of the many openings in the floor (vents etc) or even drilling a hole in the floor. rain water cant get in there. however still the problem of mounting the camera and the unsightly cable.
its good to have the camera at the top of the rear panel looking down but you dont want to encourage a leak up there, i have already had leaks at the rear panel join wihtout drilling holes.
i am now considering fixing a bracket with the double sided tape used for fixing the number plate on. if the surface area is large enough it wont come off! then runing the cable down the side of the awning rail using the self adhesive cable tie anchors. not pretty but better than leaks in the van.

I have seen some one use a mobile phone holder, the one that uses a sucker off the windscreen and hes screwed the camera to it, that's an option I will look at and run the cable across the roof , and remove when static.
I don't have a number plate surround on mine so that's not an option.
You could use 3m duel-lock if you can find some, it is like industrial Velcro, I use it to hold number plates on and it never fails to hold but it is easy to separate if needed, Google it and see what you think.
Where I worked we used it in small strips of about an inch long to hold head linings of the boats we built up, it was a bugger to get them down after and they held up in force six seas without any falling down. It is suitable for use indoors or out.
Having just got back from our first ever trip the huge blind spot behind the caravan is an issue for me, maybe because I am an advanced driver and don't like avoidable blind spots.
I am considering mounting mine using car body mastic and self tappers thru the outer skin on my Knaus 470 with the cable thru a hole sloping upwards at 45degrees into the rear corner cupboard and sealed with mastic.
The power could come from the aerial booster terminal block that is in the same corner cupboard and thru a switch just inside the door with a nice bright LED indicator
It does mean something else to check before moving off and alternatively I can get a connection off the side light provided the extra power does not confuse the car system

No its a number plate holder you fix to the van and clip the plate to
Does this mean though at night this relatively low camera position means following car headlights 'dazzle' the camera and ruin the image most of the time?
I ask because from what I have read, the higher the camera the better.
Hi guys I have seen cameras in use in both positions and would honestly say its better higher up due to increased field of vision. As for the dazzling at night when fitted lower if it's a higher quality camera it seems to cope better.

Gonna have to make a compromise here.
Fit it high and I have to drill a 20mm hole right thru the back panel.
Fit it low and no holes needed thru the back panel at all just thru the ABS bumper/trim panel.
very good, i have bought the kit but need to extend the cables so have to get over to maplin.
your installation is neat, mine wont be as i dont want to drill a hole in my van anywhere other than in the floor. i shall be driving to somerset 'blind' on friday as i wont have time to do this before then.
I wrestled with that one too and I really wanted it in the middle under the brake light but I couldnt get a cable run from there at all.
I also put a fuse in the feed side behind the light rather than rely on the car system that has five bulbs on it each side already.
Low down at number plate level was the only place I could have got it without drilling the back panel but with the potential for dirt, dazzle and getting knocked/knicked I decided against it.
The panel high up is 30mm thick with foam filling and the grommet is pretty good so I reckoned with some clear Dow silicon around the grommet and wire it should be pretty good.
I also got some good big headed self tappers and punched the holes in the alloy rather than drilling and used both a layer of double sided tape and sealer when putting them in.
Just got to adjust the aim next time I hook up........

PS
Do check the fuse is in the feed wire not the earth.

I have a Range Rover it comes with a Portable Bluetooth camera to the dash I am going to try and mount it on the roof with the Range Rover sucker pad which is very strong and it has a removable clip housing for camera 1st now
